This wrist band was issued to those attending a Night in the Gardens, an event held in 2016 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. These Gardens were first established near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1850s but this site proved unsuitable and they were moved to the present location ( Cockman Street/ Botanic Road) in 1866. In 1877 William Guilfoyle was commissioned to provide a plan of the Gardens. Charles Scoborio 1872 to 1906 was a prominent curator. A distinctive event for the Junior Technical School in 1942 was the retirement of the founding Headmaster, Mr A.W. Steane. His replacement was Mr C.F. Jeffery from Wangaratta High School. He revived the Annual Speech Night with a gathering in the Masonic Hall on 8 December 1942. These events may have been stopped during the Depression years when the number of students attending school dropped. This work was exhibited at 'Stories from Kitty's Lead Road' at Chiara Goya Gallery in 1999. Of the exhibition Ros Lawson explained: "Beyond the city, before the outback, lies a little-explored , unfashionable space - the "bushland" of suburbia. I explore this landscape of tension between nature and human settlement. It is the activities that occur within the lanscape that are of interest: animal husbandry, feral animals, nature walks, star gazing and more mythic qualities of the area. Photo of Fred Bush on Anzac Day 1987. His medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal. It is assumed Fred Bush was a Legatee. Was found in an envelope marked "For Melbourne Legacy. Anzac Day Parade featuring Legacy Lads.' From his medals it appears he served in the RAF in UK during World War 2 as he has the Europe Air Crew Star. He has a New Zealand War Service medal (on black and white ribbon on far right of photo), which implies he might have originally been from New Zealand. According to Forces War Records UK, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is awarded to Officers and Warrant officers for "an act or acts of valour and courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy".
