Ceramic - Set of plates, Bendigo Pottery, Life's a Dish, c 2006
Life’s a Dish was a tourism campaign created by the City of Greater Bendigo in conjunction with Bendigo Pottery to encourage food tourism within the City. Seven restaurants and cafes whose menus featured local ingredients were chosen to participate with their businesses promoted on ceramic dinner plates. Customers were encouraged to purchase all seven plates and were then eligible for the eighth ‘Connoisseur Master Plate’ free. The limited edition plates were made by Bendigo Pottery and artist Sue James was employed to work with each resturant on a design, hand painting each plate. Plates were priced at $25.00 each and were also available at the Visitor Centre. This is the second Life's a Dish series and artist Faye Brady was the painter of the first series, of which we currently have no examples. The first Life's a Dish series launched in 2006 featured Balgownie Estate, Bazzani Italiano, The Bridge, Gallery Cafe, Georgie's Cellar Restaurant, GPO, Goldmines Restaurant and Bar, Let's Get Saucy, The Puddler, Quills, Raffaelles and Whirrakee. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running potteries in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. It has partnered with the City on various tourism promotions and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection.Set of eight dinner plates each featuring a hand drawn design which encompass the restaurants defining features. Restaurants include Domaine Asmara (0407.2), Gallery Cafe (0407.7), Hotel Shamrock (0407.5), La Piazza (0407.3), Malayan Orchid (0407.6), Quills (0407.1)and Twenty 2 (0407.4). Early example of fine English porcelain with a new Ballarat landmark for the more discriminating buyer as opposed to the more common mass produced transfer printed items made in Czechoslovakia. The Ballarat Avenue of Honour is the longest surviving such memorial avenue to the Great War in the world and together with its entrance arch was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in June 1920.Souvenir dish made in England for local Australian sales. Viola Annie McVicars (1911–1990) was born in Korumburra on 29 April 1911. At the age of 21, she married William John Ayling (1909–1995). After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A dish, expertly potted and glazed. The style is representative of Australian ceramic design of the period, particularly that employed by the Australian art potter, Klytie Pate.Small, green glazed dish, highlighted with splashes of purple. Five ballerinas in the cavetto surround an undecorated well. The reverse is glazed a lighter green. Functional object - China Pieces NEWTONS Hotel Natimuk
These pieces were likely used for dining at Newton’s Hotel in Natimuk. Hotels in the late 1800s and early 1900s often commissioned custom-branded china for their dining rooms. The custom branding and robust ceramic build suggest they were used for both everyday patrons and guests staying at the hotel. The Newton’s Hotel was likely a well-known establishment in Natimuk, serving travellers, workers, and locals.This image features several broken ceramic fragments that were originally part of dining ware from Newton’s Hotel in Natimuk. The largest piece appears to be part of a large serving platter or dish, while the smaller pieces belong to a cup or small jug. The china is white with a glossy glaze. Printed green hotel insignia is still visible on the fragments. The breakage pattern suggests these were once part of robust, every day-use hotel ceramics.“NEWTON’S HOTEL NATIMUK” is printed in green lettering on multiple pieces. The branding appears within a decorative ribbon motif, typical of custom hotel crockery from the late 19th to early 20th century. Domestic object - Candle Holder
This chamberstick-style candle holder was commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries as a portable light source before the widespread availability of electric lighting. The handle allowed for easy transport, making it a practical bedroom or hallway light. The scalloped dish base was designed to catch wax drips, preventing messes on surfaces. This type of candle holder was often used in homes, inns, and workplaces, particularly in rural areas where candlelight remained a primary source of illumination for longer. The aged appearance and patina suggest this item dates from the 19th or early 20th century.This is a small metal chamberstick-style candle holder, designed to hold a single candle. It features a scalloped, dish-like base with wavy edges, likely meant to catch dripping wax. The central candle cup is elevated on a decorative turned stem, with a slightly flared lip to support the candle. A circular loop handle is attached to one side, allowing for easy carrying. The base sits on three or four small round feet, elevating it slightly above a surface. The surface shows signs of aging, patina, and oxidation, suggesting it is made of brass, iron, or another aged metal. Decorative object - Salt cellar, S & E Davenport, 1804
Dr. S.A. Mellick was a long standing member of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FARACS) and gifted this object to the Faculty at the end of his term in 1989. Dr. Mellick was the first Australian to have become President of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery.
