Allan Carter, Richard Carter's Father was a prominent business man and resident of Ringwood . The article describes how he was intrumental in obtaining the land for the school as one of the Formative Committee members. Also a member of the school's first Council and then the Chairman of the Building Fund. Richard Carter followed in his Father's footsteps in the Real Estate business. Y2K / the year 2000 / The millennium bug / was commonly used to refer to a widespread computer programming shortcut that was expected to cause extensive havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. Instead of allowing four digits for the year, many computer programs only allowed two digits (e.g., 99 instead of 1999). As a result, there was immense panic that computers would be unable to operate at the turn of the millennium when the date descended from "99" to "00". The Bug presented a formidable challenge to the problem-solving skills of local government officials. Lacking a cure-all that will work for every municipality, local officials must develop their own solutions to meet their community's unique needs. After meeting for 14 years in rented premises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. The first Shire Hall was demolished in 1971. The second building, Wodonga’s new Municipal Offices in Woodland Grove were used for the first time by Wodonga Councillors on 7th August 1957. The Woodland Grove building has since been used for a range of purposes, most recently as a café, but is currently unoccupied. The third purpose-built council chambers were opened in November 1976 with the first council meeting there on 1st December 1976. Commemorative trowel from Wesley Church St Kilda, 22 October 1857. Alexander Fraser (1802-1888), businessman and politician. Fraser lived at St Kilda and in 1857 was elected to its first Municipal Council; in 1859 he became chairman and mayor in 1864-65. An active churchman, he held most important offices in the Wesleyan Church and for thirty years was treasurer of the supernumerary fund, which he helped Rev. Daniel Draper to found. Dour and pious, Fraser was conscientious in fulfilling his political duties. He presided at numerous meetings and laid countless foundation stones.Silver trowel with polished wooden handle. Edward James Pardew died in 26/9/1927 aged 92. He came to Orbost from New Zealand in 1886 and selected 720 acres of hill land in the Brodribb area. He was a member of the first Orbost Shire Council. His daughter had a fruit & meat shop in McLeod Street. He was an inaugural vestryman of St James Church of England. Gladys Machin was the first female Councillor for the City of Caulfield. She served between 1950-1965 and was Mayor in 1955-56 and 1959-60. Machin championed the opening of the Caulfield Elderly Citizens Club in 1952 (later renamed in her honour as the Gladys E Machin Senior Citizen's Club). Machin was also President between 1953-1974, as noted on the engraving. The club now forms part of the Caulfield Senior Citizen's Centre at 8 Cedar Street, Caulfield South. Caulfield was one of the first local councils to establish an elderly citizen's club. This photograph used to hang in the main hall at Caulfield Senior Citizen's Centre alongside a photo of the Queen.This object is considered of historic significance for its portrayal of Gladys Machin, first female Councillor for the City of Caulfield. This book is a first edition of the Council-sponsored official history of Warrnambool. It was written by the professional historian, C.E. Sayers. He had access at the time to the notes, photographs, radio talks and other writings of the former Warrnambool Town Clerk and noted historian, Henri Worland. This book is of great importance as the chief comprehensive historical work published about Warrnambool since Vidler’s ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ published in 1907. Even though a second edition of this book was published in 1987 this edition is still very important as it contains several photographs and some textual references not included in the later book. This edition is therefore still useful today and copies of it are not easy to find now. This is a hard cover book of 190 pages. The cover has a photograph in sepia tones of men road-making with the same photograph back and front. This has a cream background with red and black lettering and a coloured image of the Warrnambool City crest on the front. An early map of the Warrnambool township has been reproduced on the inside of the cover, back and front. "Victoria the Golden" documents life in Victoria between 1850 and 1862 as viewed by artist William Strutt. Momentous events in the Colony’s history such as Separation Day (1 July 1851), the sitting of the first Legislative Council (13 November 1851), the death of Burke (June 1861) and the Black Thursday bushfires (6 February 1851) are depicted. In 1907 the Premier of Victoria Thomas Bent purchased "Victoria the Golden" from Strutt for £120 and presented it to the Library. The album depicts events in chronological order with what Strutt considered “fidelity to nature and accuracy”, so that present day Victorians may view the sketches “as records of what we may now look upon as the dim past in the rapidly progressive history of Victoria”. Victoria the Golden is celebrated as one of the Parliament’s great treasures. It is a testament to William Strutt’s skill as a draughtsman and contains over 100 assorted images which were executed between the years of 1850-1862. Strutt’s particular talent was to be able to step back and record each event with particular care to detail. Many of the pieces contained within this album are littered with notes, such as the correct resting position of a corporal’s sword or details about the cloth and cut of a subject’s jacket. Strutt also notes in one of his many sketches of the new Legislative Council chamber at Spring Street that the President, Sir James Palmer, is seated ‘a little too high’ (page 30). Throughout the album, Strutt’s illustrations bring to life the diverse nature and peoples of the new colony. His range of subjects is comprehensive and includes parliamentarians, lawyers, wives and daughters, merchants, labourers, police and military officers, indigenous communities, farmers, miners, prisoners and explorers. The everyday and the extraordinary are depicted with each turn of the page. 44 leaves heavy card, approximately 1mm thick. Sketches, watercolours and prints of varying sizes and papers are glued onto the pages. Full leather binding in blue leather with title and decorative border in gold. There are four raised bands on the spine, with gold decoration on the bands and at the head and tail of the spine. Marbled end papers and flyleaves. Gold on the edges of the book block. Card pages have a sheet of mottled blue paper on recto. Album leaf connection is a guarded system with stiff stubs and cloth hinges. Each page has a sheet of glassine paper attached at the binding edge to protect the images. Many pages stamped with "Parliament of Victoria" verso.
