Built in 1861 on land made available by Mr. Robert Allen. Grant received through municipal council and State Government. Building functioned as a library until 1926. Taken over by Buninyong Cemetery Trust and eventually fell into serious disrepair. Restored in the 1980s after great community effort, dedication and financial contributions.An important early building in the township noted for its unusual and individual classical facade of Oregon pine. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. One typed paged titled 'Bendigo Municipal Free Library Report for the month of April 1953'. Norman J. Oliver is stamped in the top right hand corner. The report is signed : (SGD) T.H. Woodrow Librarian. There are some number calculations jotted in pencil at the bottom of the page. The Linton library opened in 1871 under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute. It was later funded by grants for Free Libraries, and operated as a lending library until the 1960s. It was known at different times as the Linton Public Library and the Linton Free Library. This photograph shows a somewhat dilapidated "Linton Free Library". The verandah shown in earlier photos of this building has been removed. The building next to it is the former Nelson family home and Nelson Bros. undertaker's office, which was restored in 1987 to become the LDHS Resource Centre.Colour photographs taken in 1988 showing front of a building with a square, pedimented parapet.
