William Bacchus was one of the first European colonists to live in the area in which a township (Bacchus Marsh) was later named after him. He arrived on land occupied by the Wurundjeri and Wadawurrung peoples in 1838 and established a large sheep farm. Between 1846 and 1847 he contracted builders and other skilled workers to construct a large brick and stone two storey house. William Bacchus died in 1849. His son Henry Bacchus sold the house in 1851. For many years it was owned by the Crook family. When this pamphlet was published in 1957 the house was owned by the Lifeguard Milk Company of Bacchus Marsh. By this time the property had become derelict and was almost demolished. Around this time the Young Mens Christian Association Club in Bacchus Marsh became involved in efforts to help preserve this historic property. This pamphlet was part of those efforts. John William Henry Austin who emigrated with his brother Lindsay James to Australia in 1852, eventually settled in Durham Lead. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave Dendy the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the "bargain basement" price of only £1 per acre for 5120 acres, (an area of 8 square miles). The Special Survey also included the right to "the shipment of a worker for every £20 spent on land, whose free passage was paid by the Crown, equalling a total of 100 workers ". Accordingly Dendy sold his English holdings and paid the required £5120 and arrived in Melbourne in February 1841. However by this time land in the new colony was selling for £5 - £40 per acre. Because Henry Dendy possessed the order from the Colonial Office in London he was able to successfully oppose Super-intendant LaTrobe's attempts to alter the price of the land. Dendy appointed Jonathan Were, (an entrepreneur, who had arrived in 1839), as his Manager and who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Were and Dendy pitched their tents in the area now known as ' Park St, Brighton' and sank a well near the corner of 'St Andrew's St and Wells St'. By 1845 J.B Were and Company had bought almost half of Dendy's land and Were built himself "Moorabbin House" in Were St Brighton made from stone, quarried from local cliffs. It was still standing in 1924. On November 7, 2015 a small park in Greensborough (previously known as McKenzie Court Park, corner Plenty Lane and McKenzie Court) was renamed as Barclay Park after a local family. henry and Dorothy Barclay farmed Grace Park from 1938. Members of the family were present at the ceremony conducted by Banyule Mayor Craig Langdon assisted by Ward Councillor Mark di Pasquale. Henry Hurst and his family settled at Allwood, Hurstbridge. It is his family that the town name comes from. In 1886 Henry had a scuffle with a bushranger known as Robert Burke in the Hurst home. During the scuffle a pistol was fired wounding both men. Burke was overpowered by some station hands and placed under arrest. Hurst later died. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. [Jane Dyer May 2024] Black and white photograph showing eight men outside a tent. Memorial Plaque given to the family of Henry Tippett, killed in Action in France 26 July 1916. Henry enlisted when he was 28 years old on the 6 September 1915 in Melbourne. He was born in Carlton and was living at 529 Canning St. Carlton when he enlisted. A small man at 5'.5'' weighing 9 stone. He was allotted to the 15th Refits of the 7th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on the 18 June 1916 on the Kinfaune Castle and landed at Alexandria, On the 29 June 1916.he was transported to Marseilles and one moth later was reported Missing in Action on the 28 July 1916, A court of enquiry concluded he was Killed in Action on the 19 July 1916. He had been in France just 20 daysInscribed with the name Henry Tippett. The plaque was presented on the 4 October 1922. His father William could not attend in person and a Donald Tippett was authorised to pick up the plaque by his mother Eliza Tippett. The plaque number is 319981.His mother Eliza Tippett was granted a pension of one pound per fortnight from the 8th November 1916

The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as family legend has it, she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940.
