The minutes recorded provide an insight into the decisions of the Executive Committee and philanthropic activities of the club and its activities within the Ithacan community in Melbourne during the closing years of World War II and the immediate post-war years. A foolscap size bound minute book with leather binding on the spine and brown leather corners. There is green cloth on the covers with blue marbled paper on the inside covers and white cotton tape reinforcing the inside of the cover. The pages on the outside edges are red. ... the Ithacan Philanthropic Society supported as the Monastery..., a project which the Ithacan Philanthropic Society supported ...The workmen are doing repairs to the arched walkway entrance to the Monastery of Panagia Kathariotissa, a project which the Ithacan Philanthropic Society supported as the Monastery was in need of extensive repairs.The monastery of Panagia Katharon dates back to approx. 1696. According to tradition, the monastery was thus named, because the icon of Virgin Mary was found untouched in burning “kathara”, dry vegetation, bushes, in the exact spot where the monastery was built. The bell tower, where one can view the most breathtaking view of the island and surrounds, was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1953 and was later rebuilt. He was also the first president, a position he held from 1916 to 1924. He married Margaret Wilson, in 1893. Margaret was also very active in Ithacan Philanthropic Society and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary. Many of the male members of the Ithacan Philanthropic... of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society who worked or lived close to the CBD ...Many of the male members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society who worked or lived close to the CBD would regularly gather at the clubrooms during lunch time or after their working day. Others would come in on the weekends to catch up with friends and play cards. The men in this image were probably meeting at the former clubrooms located in Michael's Building on the SW corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society occupied the top floor of that building until Ithaca Hose was built in the 1968. The clubrooms are no longer an after work or weekend meeting place for the men. However, open days during the week provide an opportunity for all members to drop in for a coffee and chat. Many retired members enjoy the opportunity to catch up with old friendsA black and white photograph of eight men seated around a table playing cards. The minutes have been written in Greek which was the first language of the members.Through the records in this second minute book of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society it is possible to learn of the families who settled in Melbourne during the pre-World War years and throughout World War 2 , their occupations and lives and their concerns for families left behind in Greece during those difficult years. A foolscap sized bound minute book with tan leather binding on the spine and a green cloth cover on the front and back covers. The four corners are finished with brown leather. The inside covers are finished with purple marbled paper with cream cotton tape reinforcements. There are 578 lined pages but only 417 have been used. Three loose pages have been placed in order in the book. Two white labels ar stuck on the front cover. The figure '2' is written on the front.On a red embossed label on the spine: MINUTE / BOOK. -
