... of the public interest in rockets / jets / supersonic aircraft / space... of the public interest in rockets / jets / supersonic aircraft / space ...This book was owned by the late Dr Elizabeth Kerr and was donated to the Museum by the executor of her estate, Margaret Cameron. It was produced by Patons and Baldwins and contains knitting patterns for mens, womens and childrens garments. This book would appear to have been produced at the time of the Sputnik launch in 1957 - unusually the garments have been given names like 'Supersonic', 'Satellite', 'Thor', 'Nikes', 'Rocket', 'Vanguard', 'Canaveral', and 'Electra'. Prior to the launch of Sputnik by the Soviets on Oct. 4, 1957, there was little awareness of satellites; also, the Vanguard and the Thor were American rockets launched from Cape Canaveral during the same era. As far as is presently known, Patons 'Jet' wool first appeared in the mid 1950s - the name probably represented modernity and was a reflection of the public interest in rockets / jets / supersonic aircraft / space travel which occurred in the post World War II era and which culminated in Sputnik and the formation of NASA in 1958.No. 583 Featuring PATONS JET TRIPLEKNIT / Patons / KNITTING BOOK 583 / WITH T.V. ... the need for a fast jet "lead in" training aircraft, and the only... the need for a fast jet "lead in" training aircraft, and the only ...The production Mirage1110 aircraft delivery commenced from the major contractor, the GAF, to the RAAF in March 1964. The secondary contractor to the Mirage project, the CAC, realising the need for a fast jet "lead in" training aircraft, and the only such type in the 1960s, being the supersonic T-38 that was originated for the USAF's F-5 aircraft in service, presented their proposed design for a locally designed and manufactured low cost supersonic training aircraft that would meet the flying and weapons training requirements of the RAAF to the powers that be in 1967. The rationale behind the proposal was the technological advances of aircraft such as the Mirage creating a less than satisfactory learning curve for student pilots advancing from piston engined CAC Winjeel basic trainers through to first generation sub-sonic deHavilland jet trainers into the world of high technology "fast jet" fighter aircraft operation. The original design featured a tail plane less fuselage and a double delta wing to be powered by a General Electric – J85 turbojet engine that was later seen to have a fuel consumption that would unduly impinge on the range and endurance of the aircraft and the design, that had advanced to the stage of constructing a full size mockup, was revised to incorporate the Rolls Royce RB172-T-260 turbojet engine. The aircraft would feature two zero zero Martin Baker ejection seats and be capable of carrying a load of 1815 kg on four wing and two fuselage hardpoints, and be capable of a maximum speed of Mach1.5 at altitude and very high subsonic speeds at low level. In the event, the design was not proceeded with and work ceased at the end of 1970 as the RAAF were going to receive the dual seat trainer version of the Mirage, the 111D, from 1973, and the RAAF initial jet trainer requirement advanced from the deHavilland Vampire to the Aermacchi MB326H aircraft built by the CAC under license in 1967. The CA-31 mock up survived and was donated to the Museum in mid 1974CAC designed supersonic trainer -

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has operated McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft since 1984. The Australian Government purchased 75 "A" and "B" variants of the F/A-18 in 1981 to replace the RAAF's Dassault Mirage III fighters. The Hornets entered service with the RAAF between 1984 and 1990, and 71 remain in operation as of 2017. The other four Hornets were destroyed in flying accidents during the late 1980s and early 1990s.F/A-18 Hornet Jet Fighter replaced the Mirage Jet Fighter. Book, Chartwell Books, Classic fighters : the inside story, 2005
'Packed with fascinating facts, this volume contains incredibly detailed cutaway drawings of arguably the greatest fighter aircraft ever flown. Each drawing examines what's 'under the skin', clearly showing 'the inside story' - airframe structure, cockpit components, engines, fuel tanks, avionics, machine guns and cannon, missiles and bombs - revealing how the fighters were built, and the weapons they have carried into combat. Each significant component is given a number and is identified in an accompanying key. Moreover, together with stunning photographs, as well as detailed specifications, the absorbing in-depth development histories provide avid aviation enthusiasts all the information they could wish for about the most exciting warplanes spanning almost a hundred years. The aircraft themselves vary tremendously, from simple, wooden-framed, fabric-covered machines with open cockpits, often firing machine guns through whirring, propellers, to super-fast, highly maneuverable, sophisticated and stealthy fighters armed to the teeth with multi-barrel cannons and missiles that can destroy enemy aircraft from beyond visual range. In between are featured a host of combat-proven fighters, many of which have recorded a plethora of 'firsts' - first jet warplane, first supersonic fighter to enter service, first Mach 2 and even Mach 3 interceptors, first tail-less delta machine, first sweeping-wing machine, first missile-armed fighter, and many more. It is certainly an extraordinarily wide-ranging subject presented in such a fantastically individual manner that it is difficult to imagine a more striking volume in aviation publishing.Ill, p,253.non-fiction'Packed with fascinating facts, this volume contains incredibly detailed cutaway drawings of arguably the greatest fighter aircraft ever flown.
