One of a pair of separate half-length studio portraits of an unidentified man and a woman photographed using the daguerreotype process. Both portraits are contained within pinchbeck frames, bound in brown-tooled leather cases, with red, cut-velvet binding. Each daguerreotype required an individual negative, presented to the sitter as a positive, and was not reproducible. Due to an exposure time that could extend to many minutes, people were often seated for portraits. Sitters were almost exclusively drawn from the middle to upper classes because of the cost of production of the photograph. It is assumed that the subjects of the two daguerreotypes were unidentified members of Gwen Steele's family. The first bicycles arrived in Australia in the 1860s. They gradually gained in popularity and by the 1890s they offered a cheap and relatively comfortable mode of transport. Far being just a means of leisure, long distance cycle travelling became a fact of life in rural areas for people such as sheep shearers and other agricultural labourers with migratory work. The bicycle and swag travelled much of Australia on dusty dirt tracks, long before the automobile was introduced. Today the bicycle continues to be an important item for general, cheap transport, sport and leisure. Tool kits such as those shown in the item, were and important piece of equipment for bicycle enthusiasts, particularly on a longer ride where assistance may not be close by if the rider experienced a punctured tyre. John Bull Rubber Co. Ltd. was a British tyre manufacturer based in Leicester. It was established in 1906 and was originally named Leicester Rubber Company. In 1915, a new factory was built in Evington Valley Road as indicated on the repair outfit tin in this kit. It was renamed John Bull Rubber in 1934 after its popular product of the same name. Williamstown was first incorporated as a borough on 14 March 1856. It became a town on 2 April 1886, subdivided into four wards in 28 October 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 17 May 1919. The city was proclaimed by His Excellency the State Governor, the Hon. Sir Arthur Stanley on 17 May 1919. At the same time he unveiled a photographic honour board in memory of local soldiers killed during World War One and officially opened the Town Hall/Council Chambers building at 104 Ferguson Street. This bookcase was from Fintona private school Camberwell Melbourne. Fintona was a Presbyterian school for girls founded by Annie Hughston in 1896 and was originally in Camberwell and now Balwyn, Melbourne. The daughters of Pompey Elliot attended the school and the bookcase contains one of their several awards. The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The identity of the woman in this mid 19th studio portrait is as yet unidentified. The daguerreotype was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Photographic Album - 19th Century Portraits. This album is in a handsome leather tooled cover with brass ring clasp - pages have gold edging to match the gold tooling on front cover.This album comes from ''Old Box 94'' which generally contains ephemera from Merle Bush. However, this album has no identifying inscriptions (but see the following notes). There are approx 44 portraits of children, males, females, mixed groups taken by a range of studio photographers (Sandhurst, Melbourne, Stuttgart and possibly from other cities?) There appear to be no inscriptions on the reverse of these photos - but not all have been removed for checking. Calling cards, also called visiting cards, visiting tickets, or compliments cards, originated in their paper and ink form in France in the 18th century and their popularity quickly spread across Europe and the United Kingdom. Victorian calling cards were large and could be extremely ornate, with the names usually printed instead of handwritten. Women's cards were squarish and fairly large, usually about 2.5 x 3 inches. Men's cards were smaller and more rectangular, meant to fit in a breast pocket, while women often carried their cards in specially made cases of silver, tortoiseshell, ivory, or mother-of-pearl. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Both the front and back covers and the edges of the pages are dirty. This Bible and cover belonged to Ethel Ardlie, nee Ryan (1880-1967). In 1903 she married Arthur Stanley Ardlie of Warrnambool. Arthur Ardlie was the son of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the grandson of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Ethel and Arthur Ardlie had three daughters, Olive (1905- 1912), Dorothy (1910-1993) and Agnes (1915-1993). They lived at Aroona, Princess Street, Warrnambool.These items are of great interest firstly because they are examples of the type of Bible and cover that families owned in the mid 20th century. Also they are mementoes of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century, with the Bible containing important information on this family. .1 This is a Bible with a black cover with gold lettering on the spine. The cover is stained. The pages contain the Old Testament (1086 pages), a Family Register section, the New Testament (306 pages) and some coloured maps. Amongst the pages are two pressed pansies and two loose sheets. .2 This is a brown tooled leather cover for the Bible with a brown silk lining and a brown cord attached to the top of the spine for use as a bookmark. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. Illuminated address received by James Ross Briggs Esq. on the occassion of his retirement as Town Clerk and Treasurer by the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of the City of Caulfield. 2 page watercolour and ink address bound in maroon and gold tooled leather folder, The address, presented on cream colour card, is secured inside the folder by a piece of maroon colour rope ribbon and strip of leather running vertically down the centre. The address is hand lettered in red and black ink and watercolour decorations include James Ross Briggs name in a scroll surrounded by sprigs of yellow wattle and a blue, pink and yellow decorative border.
