Memorabilia - Commemorative Ribbons, Electric Light Official Switching On Ceremony ribbon, 1937
On Tuesday 28th September 1937, to the applause and cheering of a crowd of more than 300 people, a ceremonial ribbon was cut with a ‘beautiful pair of silver scissors’ by Mrs W H Everard, wife of local MP William Everard. The ribbon cutting ceremony was to officially turn on the mains electricity supply to Whittlesea and district. The moment the ribbon was cut there was a ‘blaze of light’. There were initially 78 customers, including the Shire of Whittlesea which had contracted the SEC to supply street lighting in Whittlesea, Yan Yean, Mernda and South Morang (Advertiser, Friday 1st October 1937, page 1). This ribbon is possibly a fragment of the official opening ribbon that was stamped with the date and details of the switching on of electricity in Whittlesea and given to patrons. Design drawings
Joyce Coffey (nee Hiddlestone) was the first woman to receive recognition as a designer in a major Australian manufacturing business, Kempthorne Lighting, where she was the chief designer in the post war period. These design drawings by Joyce Coffey were for the Well Glass lamp series of lights that were designed for indoor and outdoor use. Joyce Coffey worked in partnership with Selwyn Coffey on the designs. In 1956 lights from this series won a bronze award in the Industrial Design section of the Arts Festival exhibition of the Melbourne Olympic Games. Booklet, Skeletons in the cupboard. An ode on the vigintiquinquegenarianism of Melbourne Legacy, 1948
'Souvenir of Melbourne Legacy’s 25th Anniversary Dinner held at 9 Darling Street on November 3rd 1948.' A satirical ode written to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Legacy. The author's name isn't recorded. Many Legatees names are mentioned in the story it tells. One of the final stanzas shows the spirit of comradeship and sense of duty. 'Here's to our sweethearts and wives, who can still raise their smiles for us! Here's to our friendships, like star-shells lighting the miles for us! Here's to the kids! May they vigilant be for the freedom we've known, Standing up for the right, standing in with our own . . . Britons within their realm, and the Dominions, our brothers . . . Tackling, if need be, tyrants abroad . . . and, maybe some others.'The Legatees celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Legacy with a dinner and this poem was published as a souvenir.Booklet x 12 pages, containing a poem, brown print on cream paper, made as a souvenir of Legacy's 25th Anniversary Dinner.silver jubilee, 25th anniversary, poem -

Equipment, City of Kew, Traffic Warning Lantern, 1945-1965
One of three traffic warning lanterns donated by the City of Kew in 1984. The lanterns were used by the City Engineers Department for emergency street lighting to indicate dangerous conditions. The red glass in the lanterns symbolically represented danger. The Kew Historical Society is fortunate that the City Engineer, Mr Poulter, donated a number of items held by the City of Kew to the Society for safekeeping, rather than identifying them for destruction. The most significant items donated included old maps, including those issued by the Board of Works. Other items included photographs of public works undertaken by the Department. These traffic warning lanterns, while less historically significant, are indicative of a period of rapid urban development in the district during the post war period.City of Kew warning lantern (left) previously located in various streets and plant nurserytraffic lanterns -- city of kew, emergency lighting, public works -- kew (vic.) -

Card - Ticket, Musical and Bioscopic Entertainment, 1907
Considered a ‘worthy’ councillor, William [Bill] Wishart was ‘blunt’ in words and actions during his period of civic service. He was concerned with a picturesque Kew. This included street lighting, macadamised roads and improved access to Melbourne. Often accused of being German, he asserted his Australian birth and Scottish heritage. He was a strong advocate for women’s rights, believed in compulsory voting, favoured prison reform, opposed religious instruction in State schools, betting including horse racing, Home Rule, alcohol and sought to establish a tourist bureau. Cr. Wishart was ‘unanimously’ supported to nominate for the vacated seat of Richmond in Victoria’s Legislative Council. He narrowly lost the vote. After a sudden death, he was buried with Presbyterian rites in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road.
