Kites created by Helen Bushell, Kew resident for many years, and a pioneer of kite-flying world-wide. Kites are hand-made, mainly by Helen, and many were flown in local parks of Kew. Documents provide some background to the collection, and a set of photographs, which was used in an exhibition at Hawthorn Arts Centre, help to identify the kites and where they were flown. They have artistic significance in their representation of Australian indigenous, Chinese, New Guinea and other cultural symbols. Among the documents are poems, books on kite-flying written by Helen Bushell, badges and cards from international conferences, and Australian, British and American patents for kite design. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s. These postcards may or may not include the name of the publisher or printer. A number of the cards were published as parts of popular series. Henry (Harry) William Tompkins was a renowned Melbourne architect, former City of Kew councillor and sometime Mayor of the municipality. He was president of the Melbourne Institute of Architects in 1914-15. In partnership with his brother, Frank Beauchamp Tompkins, he designed the Myer Stores in Bourke and Lonsdale Streets in 1933. Locally he was the architect of the Kew War Memorial (opened 1925). In 2023 The Royal Australian Mint has released a Legacy Centenary Coin. The coin is available in a limited mintage of 30,000. The reverse of the coin features a sculpted interpretation of the Legacy logo torch cupped by a pair of hands with the title text ‘Centenary of Legacy • 100 Years of Service’ circling the design around the edge of the coin. The front side of the coin features the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse which will only be featured on coins made in 2023, making this coin even more collectible. The coin was released in two different presentation cards. Australia Post also issued a stamp featuring the Legacy Torch. It will be in general circulation as well as available as commemorative packs and first day covers. The stamp design presents the iconic branding of Legacy Australia and echoes the colours of the Australian flag. The torch design prominently placed in the stamp represents the undying flame of service and sacrifice, the foundation of Legacy’s existence. The body of the torch is presented in a gold colour, signifying generosity and compassion. In its wreath of laurel, with its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon of honour, to represent those who gave their lives for their country. The coin was released in two different presentation cards. One was $15. This one appears with the Legacy Stamp and postmarked as a first day of issue and cost $18.95 in a limited edition of 7,000. GEORGE ROSE 1861-1942: - George Rose was a well-known Victorian photographer, famous for his late 19th and early 20th century photography. He was born in Clunes, Victoria, and was in his 20th year when he founded Rose Stereograph Company in 1880. He took the opportunity of a popular trend of the times to produce stereographs, pairs of almost duplicate photographs that appeared in 3D when viewed in a handheld stereo viewer. By the 1920s, these lost their popularity, so he used his photographic skills to produce cards and postcards of scenes and people. The images record changes in the coastline, land, bay, buildings and other structures, roads, transportation and even the fashions of the times. This copy folder is one of a set of three. This folder has a green-grey textured rectangular card cover with a sketch of a rose on the front. The cover also contains the name of the postcard series, the location of the series' focus, the producer's details, and lines for adding an address. The folded cover contains a long, concertinaed page with six titled photographs on each side, totalling twelve. The folder contains scenes from Warrnambool and nearby popular areas, including Lady Bay, the Port of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Breakwater, the Viaduct, the Merri River Footbridge, the Hopkins River Mouth, and Proudfoot’s and the Fanny Nelson/Flett boathouses.
