John MURPHY VX15580 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 26.2.1940 age 28 years 5 months. Posted to 2/7th Bn on 6.4.1940 and embarked for the Middle East on 15.4.1940, embarked for Greece 9.4.1941 and returned from there in June 1941. Embarked for Australia on 8.3.1942 and disembarked Ceylon 7.4.1942 and did not re embark until 12.7.1942 and arrived in Australia 4.8.1942. Transfers to 2nd Aust Tank W/Shops AEME on 3.10.1942 and then 2/4th Aust Base W/Shops, discharged from the Army on 3.10.1945. In the Greece and Crete campaigns the 2/7th Bn was essentially destroyed and it was rebuilt from a small core in Palestine in Garrison duties and then in Ceylon before returning to Australia..1)Medal set, brass plate mounted , group of (5) re .J. Tin, Foot Powder, c. 1960s
This foot powder tin may have been manufactured for use by troops in Vietnam, if the inscription "P.D. 5/69" might refer to it's manufacture in May 1969. Khaki coloured rectangular tin constructed of a rectangular base with rounded edges, attached to one long rectangular section bent into sides, another rectangular piece with rounded edges forms the top. In top of tin, a screw on lid with seven punched holes allows the contents to be shaken out of the tin. Content residue still visible on lid but appears that the tin is otherwise empty. Inscriptions throughout described below.On front of tin "[broad arrow]/FOOT POWDER/2 OZ. NET WEIGHT/ MURPHY, LIEBERT PTY. LTD./SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA." Right side "P.D. 5/67". John Phillip MURPHY No VX17294 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 15.5.1940 age 30 years 5 months. Posted to the 2/29th Bn 29.11.1940, embarked for Singapore 30.7.1941 disembarking 15.8.1941. Promoted to L/Cpl 2.1.1942, listed as missing 16.2.1942 then POW. A telegram in his records dated 4.8.1945 to his wife Mrs A Murphy of Kirkwood St Eaglehawk states “Alive at Changi Camp”. He disembarked Australia on 8.10.1945 and discharged from the Army on 6.12.1945. During its Cuban service the Viscount is thought to have acted occasionally as the personal transport of Cuban Dictator.
