This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. Guest, a contractor resident in nearby Downshire Road, in 1889-90, presumably as a speculative venture together with the extant house at adjoining No.61. It is aesthetically significant. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as an exceptionally richly ornamented medium sized Boom period villa in Caulfield South, being unusual in this respect in its locale and comparing with nearby "Sprouston" at 19 Blanche Street (1887). The mural of an impression of Macedon Street in Sunbury 100 years ago was painted by Frank Breen, on the brick garage wall of the Catholic Presbytery and it faced the garden in front of the former Sunbury Courthouse. Before the railway arrived in Sunbury in 1859, Macedon Street was the town's business centre. Early local businesses and and institutions that the artist included in the mural include on the LHS former courthouse, Out Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Sir John Franklin Hotel. A silk scarf souvenir from Egypt. It was embroidered with military symbols and a personal message from someone called William to Nellie. The connection with Legacy is not known. The founders of Legacy were all returned servicemen who returned from overseas service in World War One so would be familiar with similar sentimental souvenirs that were purchased in Egypt and sent home to loved ones.Founding Legatees would have been familiar with Egyptian souvenirs from World War 1.Purple and yellow fabric scarf with machine embroidered text, decorative flag and floral motifs and decorative brocade edging. Scarf is made from two panels of fabric (possibly silk) machine stitched together with '14th Inf. Batt / Souvenir / of Egypt / 1916 / From William to Nellie with best love' on front face. Historically, the Elsternwick Theatre is important as the longest continuously operating cinema in Victoria. However, the building itself was not purpose built as a cinema, and little remains of the early cinema interior. It is also notable as one of a handful of early cinemas in Victoria to still operate. The Elsternwick Theatre is socially significant for its association with cinema, the major form of popular entertainment in the early twentieth century. Prior to the conversion of the premises into a picture theatre in 1911, the building was an important community gathering place; as a public hall and lodge rooms.
