Some 400 tonnes of cut firewood was distributed amongst legacy Widows in the Melbourne Metropolitan Area this year (c1966). The firewood is collected by Cobram/Yarrawonga Group of Melbourne Legacy and transported free of charge to Melbourne by transport firms who provide trucks and drivers without charge. It came from a Legacy envelope marked P7, 1966. The contents were described in red pen as: 1 Christmas Party / Govt House 2 Toy presentation Dept of Education 3 Residence Christmas party 3 HMAS Cerberus / Operation Float / Operation Firewood (added in blue pen). Legacy provided this service for many years, with the help of Linfox who provided the trucks. In the June 1995 edition of The Answer Melbourne Legacy thanked the Cobram/Yarrawonga Group for their help in supplying and cutting the wood. Begins with shots of trees in the bush and piles of cut logs beside a track before moving to a group of men standing by a car with 'Operation Firewood' on the boot. A road sign indicates 'Nathalia 6 1/2', 'Numurkah 22', 'Picola 3'. 'Katunga' and 'Barmah'. Shots of an empty Austin flat bed truck with 'Legacy Operation Firewood', poster on the drivers door covering the truck company name,and other empty flat bed trucks parked along a country town street which looks unsealed. A shot of a wooden sign saying 'Euroa Please slow down' follows with the Legacy car travelling very slowly past it before we see a large group of men throwing up logs onto a nearly fully loaded truck, and then a partially loaded truck with men on the flat bed stacking the logs. Five trucks are shown fully loaded and a crowd of men are gathered around a table. A circular saw (with no safety guards!) is being used to cut the bigger logs into a manageable size for splitting before being loaded by a lot of men of varying ages. The film then moves to the city where we see three men riding on the back of a moving fully loaded truck, before it stops to deliver the cut but unsplit logs to a delighted widow and her children. The logs are hurled into her front garden as a well dressed man photographs the proceedings. Other deliveries follow to further widows, but it is not clear who is going to split the logs, some of which are extremely large. The film ends showing a line of empty trucks, and a fenced city area with a sign saying 'Melbourne Legacy Firewood' holding further a supply of logs. 15 mins 07 sec. Said document is essentially an instruction manual detailing how the Club is to be administered and the duties of officials. 2/A page (unclear if intended for use as a poster or letter) announcing a Business Persons Breakfast to be held at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall on 19/11/1986, wherein Jeff Kennett, M.L.A., Leader of the Opposition of the Parliament of Victoria, will deliver a speech titled ‘Responsibility Before Rights’. 3/A booklet announcing the 25th anniversary celebration of the Rotary Club of Caulfield, to be held at Tudor Court on 24/02/1987. Contains the menu, national anthem, programme, and two lists – one of the founding members of the Club and one of the extant members of the Club. 4/Two copies of a booklet announcing a dinner, to be held at Tudor Court on 10/11/1987, wherein charter will be presented to the Rotary Club of Caulfield-Rosstown by District Governor Ian Knight. ... operation firewood... legatee operation firewood sydney legacy Label of 'Colour Film Pty ...30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. Legatees are shown cutting, trucking and delivering firewood to widows. Originally known as Loves River it became Kawarren station on 16 June 1902. It consisted of a loop siding and combined office and passenger shelter. Goods loading was sawn timber (brought in on four tramways operating between 1905 and 1939), firewood, charcoal and limestone. In 1920 the limestone company built a store shed and a covered loading area at the terminus to assist operations. The company also requested the siding to be extended by three metres, which Victorian Railways did in the same year. This gave the loop a capacity of 21 trucks. Around 2,000 tonnes per year of limestone traffic kept the station busy until trade ceased in 1957. A postal motor started in October 1938, Kawarren being a point where the postal motor and trains were permitted to cross.B/W. G42 with a Down goods train at Kawarren on 14 December 1955. On No.2 Road empty NQR wagons proceeding to get filled at a covered lime loading operation.
