This book could be described as the summing up of a theory of physical appearances, devised by a painter and demonstrated by paint. The foundation of this theory was laid down first in Paris by Max Meldrum early 1900s. A review calls the book "the most outstanding book on the craft of painting yet published in any language. Max Meldrum was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 03 December 1875. His family arrived in Australia and Max Meldrum attended the National Gallery School, winning the Victorian Travelling Scholarship in 1899. It was deaccessioned and transferred from the Ballarat School of Mines library so would have been used by students and staff of the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Munro Engineers were pioneers in farming equipment since 1800s. Their main product was a range of fencing machinery. In 1963 they invented and produced the world's first tractor mounted, hydraulic post driver with digger. John Valantine collected and pasted newspaper cuttings about Mt Dandenong and Kalorama into a scrapbook covering the period from approx 1922 - 1937. Much of the information dealt with the difficulties faced by local fruit growers so John Valantine may also have been a fruit grower. It is also possible that John himself wrote many of the items as from July 15th, 1930, he was appointed a local correspondent for The Age newspaper...John Valantine lived in Farringdon Road, Kalorama. The Ship's Report Inward contains entries from 1877 to 1917. It is a record of vessels that visited the Port of Warrnambool during that time and was filled in by the Harbour Master on behalf of the Warrnambool Harbour Board. The book has also been used as football scrapbook for both the Australian and Victorian Leagues, with articles and photographs from the early 20th century events and photos of players in 1953. A child has also used the book for drawing and writing.It appears that this historic ledger was once regarded as insignificant and used for other purposes such as a scrapbook and spare paper for drawing. However, the ledger is now considered to be of important locall significant for its accurate reports of all vessels inward bound to the Port of Warrnambool, giving a summary of activities during the forty year period from 1877 to 1917. These letters etc were initially printed in the Warrnambool Standard and other newspapers during the First World War. They were collected by the Bonnett family and pasted into the exercise book, possibly by Jessie Bonnett. The book has been transcribed and republished by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society under the title Fields Of War. It contains the names of over six hundred soldiers from the Warrnambool District.This represents a valuable insight into the lives, experiences and feelings of WWI soldiers and nurses and their families. It has value in the individual letters collected with many of the originals no longer surviving but also as a collection.
