Destination sign yet to be changed from View Point. Photograph of X1 461 at the Ballarat Road terminus with the driver turning the trolley pole. The tram has a "Pay as you enter sign" sign. The driver who drove the tram one man collecting fares has a summer jacket on and is carrying the ticket bag without a ticket wallet - Fare Box tram. All fares were 2 1/2d or 2d tickets sold in lots of six tickets. See item 876 Sections and Fares Book. The driver's trousers do not appear to have a red seem. The tram carried Fare Boxes 9/1930 to 6/1936. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." 1019.1 and 1019.2 - Black and white photograph of SEC Tram 14 involved with a collision with a Ford truck during 1939 on the corner of Drummond St. North and Webster St. Ford truck registration 277.745 . Both vehicles have windows smashed and other damage. Tram painted in 1930's colour scheme with a small "Pay as You Enter" sign adjacent to the open door. Known to be SEC photos originally. See SEC Photo collection item. Was reprinted in the Ballarat News during the early to mid 1980's. Other photos of this accident gave close up details of lining used in the tram paint scheme. This was used as the basis of lining done on No. 27. The tramcar body card shows it was repaired following an accident June 1939. (Note added 2-2-19). Photocopy made 4/1999 for display purposes. Eight (8) Digital images taken by George Coop during the period 1968 - 1970, of trams at the City Loop. .1 - 33, 17 and two other single truckers parked in the loop with motor vehicles and parking meters. No. 33 has an Eureka Roofing Tile Advert. .2 - 28? passing two track workers cleaning the west end points with a bogie car and three single truckers in the loop. In the background are Patersons and Dickins Food Store. .3 - No. 12 parked at the east end of the loop, hard up against the tram in front. From an email from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: This Stevenson six widow saloon horse tram No 46 is fairly standard. The horse cars did not have wheel skirts like the cable trams 6 and 8 window cars. Sitting at the terminus in High Street at Parkhill Road at the gates of the Boroondara General Cemetery ready for its return trip to Richmond. The tram is being run one man. Note the location of gates, pay as you enter the front step. The driver has a conductors bag around his neck and waist. No conductor present in the photo. His uniform is classic Company issue. He is wearing a Tunic and vest! And early issue cap with a white band. Date: around circa 1900 as the clock tower, brick wall and cast iron fence are all in place and the car number is faded out. Set of five pamphlets of an industrial or public relations nature issued during the early to mid 1980's. .1 - "The Wage Freeze" - foolscap printed on yellow paper, issued by the ATMOEA Vic Branch May 1983. .2 - "Public Transport: You pay more for less" - change of services, staff cuts, safety, Fuel conservation and what should be done - issued by the North Fitzroy Tramways Depot Committee and notes a meeting on Monday 17 September - (1984 by calendar check) - foolscap printed both sides on white paper. .3 - "$440,000 tram stripped for spare parts" - tram Z137, stripped - duplicated on blue quarto paper, issued by "concerned tramway workers" .
