Florence Tatham Mellblom (nee Henry) was a painter, naturalist and photographer. She was born at Portland, Victoria, and studied art in Ballarat. She was a talented etcher from childhood, and joined the Portland Camera club. She also produced many watercolour paintings of the historic places of Portland. This type of film developing tank was developed by Kodak in 1913. It was designed to allow the user to develop film in the daylight. The cylindrical tank inside the box with the dark apron surrounding it protected the film from the light. This model was 'Model 2' and Brownie size. The instruction booklet is dated to 1918.This objects helps to tell the story of photography as a hobby. It is an early example of a portable film developing which allowed the user to develop film in the daylight. It shows advancement in the technologies available to the hobby photographer.Rectangular timber box and lid. The lid has red lettering ' Kodak Film Tank'. The container part of the box has dovetail joints and a slight lip at the bottom where the base is larger than box. The box contains 2 metal turning handles, a cylindrical film tank and a metal tool which has a circular top end and a slight hook at the opposite end. The inside of the tank is painted black. The box also contains an instruction booklet. At the inside base of the box there is a paper leaflet pasted to the bottom. Cigarette cases were first used during the 19th century. At first they were basic, utilitarian items but during the Victorian era manufacturers began to decorate them, some very ornately. Materials such as sterling silver was used and the cigarette case became a fashion accessory.This cigarette case highlights the time when cigarettes were a common item for many people, especially men, to use. This gas mask was the standard issue gas mask for the Australian Army prior to and going into the Second World War. The mask featured two eye pieces made out of splinter-less glass which were removable to allow for decontamination of the mask without damaging the splinter-less glass eye pieces. The filter box was manufactured by Willow in Melbourne. The mask features a tissot system, which uses air provided by the intake assembly to defog the eyepieces. Air breathed out passes directly through the outlet valve which was designed work as voice membrane in order to enhance the speech of the user Unknown to most is that the GSR series of masks were manufactured in Australia rather than being imported from the United Kingdom. This was mainly due to the long travel distance between the UK and Australia, as well as the fact that the UK could not afford to give out masks during the war. The majority of the masks were manufactured at the Commonwealth Ordnance Facility Maribyrnong in Melbourne.This mask is representative of Australian manufacture during WWII. The front of the mask has two large glass eye pieces with metal rims and a metal outlet valve. A concertina fabric and rubber tube leads from the outlet valve to a reddish brown box which is the filter. A leather apron would have been worn as a protective garment by blacksmiths. It would have helped to them from sparks and other hazards whilst they were working. Early businesses in Portland included a blacksmith. This would have been vital to the town and its development. Although the provenance of the apron is unknown it is possible that this belonged to a Portland blacksmith.Brown leather apron. Leather neck strap with metal. Metal buckle to the side. Rope pieces have been added where the original leather straps have broken off. Bottom right corner has a triangular shaped rip which has been mended and sewn back together. This objects is part of the history fo small business in Portland and the Glenelg Shire.
