These photographs are copies of original paintings by the Australian marine artist A V Gregory (1867-1957), also known as Arthur Victor Gregory. Gregory lived and worked in South Melbourne. He took over the Gregory Studio owned by his father, George Frederick Gregory, painting actively between 1899 and 1932. He usually signed his works as ‘A V Gregory’. Some of his original works have been sold for thousands of dollars. These mounted photographs, by A.V. Gregory, show both steam and sailing ships sailing in the Tea Race from China to London in 1872. The information included with the photographs has the following text: “Tea Clippers “ Well done Cutty Sark, by Bobbie Burns The CUTTY SARK and THERMOPYLAE. The start of the 1872 Tea Race from China to London. The “Cutty Sark” first away, followed closely by the “Thermopylae”, finally parting after several days’ company. On this race the “Cutty Sark” lost her rudder in the Indian Ocean, putting her hopelessly out of the race, and enabling the “Thermopylae” to pass her and reach London on 11th October, 115 days out, the “Cutty Sark” limping home seven days later. The credit of the race was given to the “Cutty Sark” by the shipping world. Copies of the pictures may be had from A.V. Dorade boxes operate on the principle that air can pass relatively freely through the chambers, yet rain or sea wash will be trapped in successive chambers and drain out the small holes in the sides of the box. A dorade is a type of ventilator that allows air to move in and out of a vessel's cabin or engine room but baffles or screens within the box it is fitted to prevent the rain and seawater from getting inside. A Dorade was first seen in use on the "Dorade", an ocean racing yacht designed by Olin James Stephenson II and built in 1929. Since then there have been modifications to the original design. In 1934 a horse called Peter Pan stopped the nation when he defied the odds and won his second Melbourne Cup. The story behind the chestnut horse, one of only five to win two Melbourne Cups, will be showcased at the National Museum of Australia that on Thursday acquired the 1934 cup. The Australian thoroughbred won his first Melbourne Cup as a three-year-old colt in 1932 but was deemed unfit to contest the race in 1933 after suffering a near fatal viral disease that swept Sydney's racing stables. In 1934 Peter Pan became a household name when at odds of 14/1 he took out the Melbourne Cup by four lengths - this time as a five-year-old horse ridden by Darby Munro. The play was produced by EJ Carroll at the Athenaeum Theatre, the Australian premiere. The play enjoyed a long and successful run with Frank Bradley setting a record by performing as leading man for forty weeks. Frank Talbot had leased the Athenaeum Hall for several years before negotiating with the Melbourne Athenaeum board members to renovate the hall into a modern theatre. The work was completed in 1923. The theatre became a well-known venue for plays but later, as movies became popular a biograph box was constructed to house movie projectors. The theatre manager, Frank Talbot, who leased the theatre from the Melbourne Athenaeum, signed an agreement with British Dominion Films in 1932, to show only British movies. Hoyts Theatres took over the lease in 1955 and later the Melbourne Theatre Company performed in the theatre, bringing live performances back to the theatre for several years. Programs of the early performances of plays are a reminder of the original purpose of the theatre.
