The move to build the Mechanics Institute was started in 1883 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke in 1885. This bonnet would have been worn when the wearer was out doors and has been, perhaps, remodelled from a previous bonnet. All women wore a head covering out of doors in the past up to about the 1950s.This bonnet has no known provenance but is retained for display purposes as an example of a lady's bonnet from a previous era.This lady's bonnet is made of cream straw with dark brown cloth pleated trimming and cream felt flowers and leaves. The centre of some of the flowers have gold small buttons attached by fine wire covered in straw. Black and white photograph of SEC Ballarat No. 21 decorated as the Ballarat Base Hospital's Trambulance in support of the Hospital's Yuille House Remodelling Plan, $50,000 appeal. Photographed by Bob Prentice at the Mt. Pleasant terminus on 13/5/1969. Tram is painted white - based on the Myer's Christmas tram of 1968 (See Reg. Item 1881) and the 1969 Begonia Festival (See Reg. The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Mechanic's Institute which was built on the present site in 1885. The hall was remodelled in 1922 and renamed the Sunbury Memorial Hall. The building was used until the 1960s as the meeting place by the Shire of Bulla Council. Over the years it has continued to be used for community activities.A coloured photograph of the front view of the Sunbury Memorial Hall with a view of the portico with a front window on either side. The portico has a rounded iron roof and the two front windows are arched. The rendered front of the hall has been painted cream with grey and maroon trim. 1917 was the year in which the new Mission at 717 Flinders St extension was being built but did not open until after Michaelmas that year. The old Mission opened in 1907 on the Australian Wharf was obviously still in operation. Proposed remodelling of the wharf necessitating removal of the Mission perhaps deferred due to the Great War.This detailed poster intended for visiting crews in 1917 provides some insight into the fact of continued access to the old Mission required circa 1914 by the Port Authority to be vacated. The Widow and Children statue was installed in the Legacy Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance on 29 September 1988. Sculptured by Louis Laumen a Melbourne artist. It symbolises the work that Legacy does with the families of deceased veterans since 1923. The artwork is a sketch of the statue and does not have a artist name on it. The period of the painting is between the years 2008 and 2016 after the remodeling of the Forecourt and the major renovations to the building 2016 - 18. This is the first of 3 water colours by Stan Thomas. The building was the HQ of the Bendigo RSL now known as the Bendigo Military Museum. The eastern end of the school was opened in 1870 and led by John Hamilton (teacher), his wife Mabel (assistant) and Emma McColough (pupil teacher). Within a fortnight there were 130 children. This building was erected c1856 as the Wesley Church. Negotiations for its sale to the Ballarat School of Mines started in 1883, and the sale was completed for 2000 pounds. The Ballarat School of Mines Musuem was transferred to this building in 1885 giving the collection a more permanent and suitable location. The front was remodelled in 1920. The building was converted from the museum to the E.J. The sketch of the Pig & Whistle would be pre1968 as the gate was remodeled with two white half gates at this time and the ivy removed. The building was purchased in 1968 by the Benash family and renovated inside and out with a white, Tudor style outer facade. It was renamed Tatra Hut. The restaurant was sold again c1975 and became a Reception Centre. This information was provided by Victor Grotaers who was the resident solo-accordionist in 1968 when the new Tatra Hut opened. He recalls the opening night as being a large affair reported by Channel 9 at the time.Copy of a pencil sketch of 'The Pig & Whistle' restaurant at Mt Dandenong.
