Willoughby E Johns Driver Russell S T Glanville Handwritten extract ...Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 5/12/1893 where three miners had a narrow escape in a winding accident at the Huster's Reserve No 2 Company's Mine, in Pall Mall. At the change of shift, three miners, William Merrin, Frederick Willoughby and E. Johns got into the cage on the western compartment to be lowered to the 845 ft. plat. The men in the cage in western compartment were very alarmed has cage hit the bearers on the 845 feet plat with considerable force. If it had crashed through the bearers they would have landed in the water below. The shaft was 1070 feet deep. The Mine Manager, S. T. Mr Charles Tuck was Veterinary Surgeon from Baydon Hill, Wiltshire, England, who migrated to Australia c1850. He married his cousin Miss Jan Chaudler in Melbourne in1853. He was at the Ballarat gold-fields at the time of the riots and then they settled in South Brighton ( later Moorabbin) and built a large Georgian Styled home called 'Baydon Hill'. The Tucks had a large family - 9 children. Charles enjoyed a prosperous Veterinary Practice as his advice was needed for stock purchases by the farmers / settlers. Charles died in 1893 and Jane left the property c 1903 and died at Blackburn in 1928. The House had 5 owners, the last being the Healey family c1920 and at some stage the name was changed to 'The Grange' and the gates shown were installed. Taffrail log, Late 19th Century
... s: t. trumblen;.... melson s: h. johnston s: t. trumblen; ordinary seaman: r ...John Bliss (1795-1857) was born in Connecticut, trained as a silversmith and clock maker in Vermont, and began in business as a jeweller in New York around 1830. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed chronometers and other items for navigational use. The firm became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957. Truman Hotchkiss, a sea captain from Stratford, Connecticut, designed a mechanical Taff rail log in which the recording mechanism was placed on taffrail (or upper part of the stern) of the ship. After acquiring the rights to Hotchkiss’s patents of 1864 and 1867, John Bliss & Co. began advertising the "American Patent Taffrail Log." The firm also offered mechanical logs based on patents granted to John Bliss, Jnr and his brother George, as well as English instruments based on Massey’s and Walker’s patents. The SPECULANT is historically significant as the largest ship to have been registered in Warrnambool, and is believed to have been the largest barquentine to visit Melbourne. It is evidence of the final days of large commercial sailing vessels involved in the Victorian and New Zealand timber trade.
