Leopoldine Mimovich was born in 1920, in Neumarkt in the Italian Tyrol. In 1940, aged 20, she moved to Vienna where she studied clay modelling and drawing. From 1943 she attended the School of Wood Sculpture in Hallstatt, graduating in 1947. Following her marriage to Ljubisa Mimovich, the couple migrated to Australia in 1949 travelling on MV Skaugum. After an initial period at Bonegilla and Royal Park Migrant Hostels the couple moved to Yarraville and then to 33 Miller Road, Kew, where she established her studio. A wood sculptor, painter and etcher, she was awarded an OAM for services to the arts in 1985. Iron sculpture by Cliff Burtt welcomes visitors to the Gateway of Eltham. It was constructed of Corten Steel in 1994 and won the Eltham Public Art Award in 1996. “Award winning sculptor, Cliff Burtt, often references the geometry of architectural forms in his bold, minimalist public sculptures. Eva Fisher was a valued member of the AFB and wished to commission a sculpture for the grounds in the front of Paterson Hall. Noted sculptor Ian Bow was commissioned and created Urban Cycle, a seven panel metal sculpture that follows the development of the local area. Prior to receiving the commission, Ian Bow went through a period of temporary vision loss, which gave him insight into how the sculpture could be appreciated by the blind and low vision community. The different stages are: Harmony - Two pelicans amongst reeds. Intrusion - Frog, kookaburra, mice, fish, lizard and butterfly. Expansion - Doors, windows and roofs under tree canopies. Industry - A factory with large chimney blowing smoke. Density - Multiple boxes, some with figures inside, are crowded beneath a bridge and dome. Decay - Boxes with broken doors and unfinished concrete. Renewal - A church with a Calvary cross over roughened surface.Heptagonal cast aluminium sculpture with seven panels arranged around a central metal pole.Thanks to the generosity of Evangeline Annie Fisher this sculpture, entitled 'Urban Cycle', was created by Ian Bow in 1975 and depicts stages of development of a city through the use of tactile forms. 'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett is the first sculpture erected on the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway. It was officially unveiled by Professor David Battersby on 15 April 2015 From Churchill & District News 16 October 2014 The Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway will have its official public opening on Saturday October 18, with a walk finishing at Federation University Australia’s Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Gippsland Campus. ... An important link on the newly developed pathway was recently completed with a path south of the FedUni Student West Residences. The path now allows walkers to turn off the Eel Hole Creek path before reaching Glendonald Estate and to follow a picturesque, tree lined walkway to join up with the footpath on the Eastern side of Northways Road. From there the footpath joins into Federation University’s network of walking paths that proceeds past the Switchback Art Gallery, down through the pine plantation and along Lake Kretlow and the Churchill Golf Course. Project Manager Mike Answerth, said the opening of the West Residences section of the path means there is now only one short link to complete. “We’re now very close to realising the project’s objective to join up all these walking paths to provide a continuous pathway that encompasses town, campus and parkland. The next stage of the project will be the completion of Latrobe City’s East West Link and the enhancement of the walking path with artistic and cultural features.” said Mr. Answerth. Head of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Dr Harry Ballis, said the project had been made possible through the contributions of the five former Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) partners. “The Art and Culture Pathway represents another important step in joining the Churchill township and the university campus as a physical and social entity,” Dr Ballis said. “This was an initiative of the GEP and it is pleasing to see it coming to fruition.” The path now reaches as far as the golf driving range but plans are already under way to connect with the Mathison Park board walk and pathway, which surrounds Lake Hyland in Churchill. When the loop is completed, residents and visitors will have an approximately 5km circular walking path which links up the Churchill town centre, Federation University Australia and Mathison Park. The late Robert Ulmann (1927-1999) was a well-known local Warrnambool artist, creating murals, sculptures and art works. The sculpture 'Lady in the Wind' was presented to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Dr Ivor (Ivor Philip Quentin Scott 16-08/1928 - 1/11/2016) and his wife Deirdre Scott (dec.). This sculpture is significant for being a creation of Robert Ulmann, well known local Warrnambool artist. The sculpture titled "Lady in the Wind" by Robert Ulmann. Subject is a robed woman moving forward, long hair streaming behind her, clutching fabric of skirt in each hand. Created in 1975. Made of Mount Gambier stone. Plaque describing the sculpture is on a nearby wall.
