Functional object - Telephone Exchange Testing Unit, H T & E Co. Ltd. LIVERPOOL ENGLAND, 1955
This is the MINJAH telephone exchange testing unit. The exchange was adjacent to the property of MINJAH which is situated near Hawkesdale in Western Victoria. The exchange operated between 1955 and 1985. The testing unit was used for detecting and testing faults in the telephone system. The keys along the front were called "Hospital Keys" and were used to give subscribers a temporary connection in the event of a break down. The telephone exchange was replaced by an automatic exchange.This is a good example of a manual telephone system in Western VictoriaThis is a rectangular polished wooden box with a telephone mechanism on the side connected by a hook. On the front right is a dialling system which has been detached. On the front left is a volt meter. At the front bottom are seventeen switches. In the middle front are twenty keys which can flash up in various colours. There is writing on the side . James Crawford Douglas was born in Ireland in 1842. He came to Australia in 1864 and married Mary Michael (1849-1921) in 1868. They settled at View Hill farm in Woodstock West where they had the following family:- Family tree records descendants of James and Mary Douglas. Mr Dempsey and family were the first selectors to arrive at Mt Wycheproof 1872 or early 1873. One Dempsey Land Application is dated 15-3-1873.Factual documents obtained from a Melbourne archive show settler,John Dempsey,securing land at Wycheproof. Several official Lands Department correspondence provides evidence of Dempsey's early land acquisition at the beginning of the town's farming history and settlement from 1872 - 1882. Robert Logan took up Lot 28 in the Village Settlement in 1896 and worked it until his death in 1936. His second son, Malcolm, took over the selection and continued to work it until he married and then it was subdivided. This photograph shows the oats that Robert Logan grew to feed his horse. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph of a white haired man with a large white moustache man wearing overalls tying up a sheaf of hay. He was an orbost Shire councillor for 25 years, helped to establish the library and the Mechanics Institute and was one of the first Orbost Butter Factory directors.These albums are significant mainly for their connection to Carl Grove.The collection of live plant specimens from the wild with correct labelling can provide a record to be used for research.Three large books of botanical specimens.
