The orchestra consisted of German male civilians interned as "Enemy Aliens" during World War 2. Those interned in 1941 were former Australian residents and New Guinea missionaries.The program indicates the caring attitude of the Australian authorities in permitting the acquisition of musical instruments, and the encouragement offered to the internees in order to produce the concert. In 1973 when Brian Schultz was working as a dye chemist at Yarra Falls (a Textile Factory making fabrics for school uniforms, suits etc.) in Abbotsford, he was invited by his friend to be his best man. He chose the colour green, dyed the fabric himself, and took the fabric to a tailor in Smith Street, Collingwood to have the suits made up for the December wedding. The green shirt which Brian wore with the green suit at the wedding in 1973 came in handy when he wore it 37 years later at his son's 30th birthday Halloween dress up party, when he dressed up as The Hulk. He cut up the sleeves of the shirt and painted himself green. Trams between Bell St. and Sebastopol during the day, were driver only. Conductors changed trams at Bell St. or wherever they crossed one another on the single track. "Braemar" at 18 Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills - built c1894, demolished in1977 – and home of James Sneddon Snr. and family from 1890 until c1950. We believe it is James is at the gate and his family on the veranda. James was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire Scotland in 1833, as was his wife Jane. He died in March 1901 and she in March 1911. They are buried in Boroondara Cemetery (Pres B0522) with their daughter Jane (1864-1928). James Sneddon (Snr) was an important man in early Surrey Hills. He established real estate and ironmongery businesses in Union Road – first on the corner of Stirling Crescent and later over the road on the corner of Windsor Crescent. He was chairman of Surrey Hills’ MUIOOF (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows). James Sneddon Jnr. followed his father in the family real estate business and was an even busier community man. He was a JP and had roles in the Surrey Hills ANA, the Progress Association and the Choral Society. He lived 2 doors from his father. The real estate business continued on the corner of Windsor Crescent and Union Road (north side) until the business was sold to the Doubleday (family) after WW2.The Sneddon family were early settlers and business owners in Surrey Hills and remained over 3 generations. Different family members held many roles in community organisations. Clay was quarried from part of this area and used to make the bricks used in the construction of his home, known as 'Ancyra'. This is still extant at the corner of Weybridge and James Streets. Maling grazed cows and used the quarry as a water source. He was the uncle of John Butler Maling, Mayor of Camberwell. He was married to Kate Conlon in 1882. They had 3 children: Silas Young, Alick and Zillah. Maling was born in c1829 in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire; he died in Surrey Hills on 9 October 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-0586. Mrs Kate Maling (born c1859 in Co Meath, Ireland) died at the property on 8 March 1921. She is buried in Brighton General Cemetery. Probate was valued at over 10,000 pounds and included other properties in Sandringham, Hawthorn and Macedon. At the time of her death the Surrey Hills property was described as being 23 acres with 2 brick houses, 1 cow, 2 heifers and 40 fowls or chickens. The property was subdivided after her death. The property was subdivided into 110 house blocks in c1923 - see Maling's Estate subdivision flyer on the State Library of Victoria's website. This shows that the Grovedale Park site had been acquired by Camberwell Council by this time. An attached newspaper clipping documents prices realised for a cross-section of blocks. The MMBW map of 1925, also on the SLV website, shows the outline of the clayhole / quarry. The quarry was filled in after several drownings or near drownings and the land is now occupied by a park and playground, known as Grovedale Road Park, maintained by the City of Boroondara. Beckett Park is sited on horizon to the left beyond the trees. This image is one of several family group portraits taken by Stevenson and McNicoll on rural properties. This property has been identified as that of John Tilley at Parwan’s Creek. The people depicted are presumably members of the Tilley family. The dwelling has since been demolished. Tilleys Road in Maddingley is probably named for this family farm.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll. The property has been identified as that of John Tilley at Parwan’s Creek. This property has since been demolished. Presumably, the photo is of members of the Tilley family. The image shows a family group of four women and one young child. It is unclear if the child is a boy or a girl, due to the custom of clothing young male children in dresses. The women are sitting or standing in two groups. To the right stands an older woman in a starched white apron, perhaps indicating that she is the housekeeper. The group on the left is of one woman standing and two women seated, one reading a newspaper or magazine. The young child reaches out one arm to her, perhaps for reassurance. The dwelling consists of two structures, one single storeyed cottage, which is perhaps the older part, and an adjoining weatherboard house with a steeply pitched roof and a prominent chimney at the front. The cottage has a shingled verandah partially covered by corrugated iron, which also covers the roof. Trees, a climbing vine and shrubs form a rather unkempt garden. This 1935 Coronation medal was awarded to individuals for distinguished Citizenry. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V, a commemorative medal awarded to citizens who had made contributions to their community, as recognised by their local council. The silver medal has the profile of the King and Queen Mary on the front, in their crowns and robes. Around the edge in raised letters is written 'George V and Queen Mary May VI MCMXXXV'. On the reverse are the letters GRI (Georgius Rex Imperator) in the centre, with the outline of a crown directly above the letters and the words 'May 1910' and 'May 1935' written either side of GRI.
