In June 1903 some of the Friendly Societies in Bacchus Marsh formed an association to play Rope Quoits tournaments. The first tournament concluded after a series of matches in September 1903. The winners of the tournament were presented with a trophy in the form of an illuminated photographic portrait of the winning players. Reports of a Rope Quoits Association being formed for Friendly Societies members appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Express from 13 June 1903. Reports of the weekly tournaments subsequently appeared in the Express through June to September 1903. The Returned and Services League of Australia (often abbreviated to RSL) is a support organisation for men and women who have served or are serving in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It was formed as the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia in 1916, became the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmens Imperial League of Australia in 1940, and became the Returned Services League of Australia in 1965. The change to its current name was made in 1990 to reflect the organisation's concern for current as well as former servicemen and servicewomen. The patron of the RSL is Queen Elizabeth II. Also a photo of Betty C Lawson MBE, Florence Nightingale Medal, FCNA, MID, attending the conference who noticed the book 'We are here, too' in which she has written the foreward. The letters and diaries of Sister Olive Haynes, a nursing sister in WW1 provide a unique look at life at the front. Her son became a Legatee, David Dooley as her married name was Olive Dooley. The date is unknown but probably 1991 the year John Sullivan was president. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record that Legacy had a presence at an RSL Conference. Colour photo x 5 at an RSL Conference and two yellow paper labels. The RSL Hall was in Clyde Street, Linton, where the Telstra building now stands. The hall was demolished in the 1990s after the opening of the new recreation reserve hall.Small black and white photograph shows a group of hatless men standing to attention at left and a group of mostly children and women seated and standing to right. The Kew RSL is located in "Wilton" House, 63 Cotham Road. The RSL was established on January 1st 1920, later joining with the Hawthorn RSL. In November 1931, Cr. C.R. Parry organised the reformation of the Kew Sub Branch and its first president was Brig-Gen Pat McGlin, a veteran of the Boer War and the First World War. On July 17th 1932, the club rooms first opened on Army land at the corner of High Street and Highbury Grove. In late November 1948, the Kew RSL bought the "Wilton" house from the Kew City Council for £10,067, opening seven years later in July 1955. [Source: Victorian Heritage Database]This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Watsonia Returned and Services League was established in 1952 in a then outer suburb of Melbourne subdivided for war service homes and lacking in most community facilities.
