The 1st Contingent departed Fremantle on 7 November 1899 and returned on 29 December 1900. The 2nd Contingent departed 3 February 1900 and returned 8 December 1900. Due to the shortage of khaki material, the 1st Contingent uniforms wore their blue militia tunics, blue puttees and a dark blue puggaree on departure. An Anglo Boer War Service of Reconciliation is held annually on the first Sunday in June at the "Fallen Soldiers" (Boer War) Memorial in Kings Park attended by descendants and representative of all combatant nations. The date selected is the closest Sunday to the date of signing of the Treaty or Peace of Vereeniging (31 May 1902). These notes are based on a report prepared for the Board re the donation of materials collected by Wal Jack and donated to the BTM in 2011. The following notes are general across the collection unless written for a specific Ballarat item. Has proven association with Wal Jack and tramway developments within Australasia until 1964 and given their extent particular significance. Features West Australian trams.Grey covered photograph album with word "Snapshots" on front cover, tied together with a grey cord, light brown paper inside covers holding some 19 sheets of card on which photos have been mounted using photo corners of various types, captions in blue or black ink. Has some 126 black and white photographs including some postcards. Has photos of various locations and lines within Perth, includes works trams, trolley buses, arranged by tramcar class in some places. Also has some Kalgoorlie and Leonora electric trams and Derby horse tram. Includes some tickets and one newspaper clipping re the closure of the Perth system. This is a very old photograph of the Broken Hill City Band. it was most likely taken on their visit to Ballarat where they competed in the 1906 South Street Eisteddfod. One of the other bands that competed in their section was the 'Kalgoorlie and Goldfields Infantry and Regimental Band'. The speculation being that this photo was presented to, or was supposed to be presented to the Kalgoorlie Band. The Broken Hill City Band won many prizes at South Street in the band sections and the solo sections over the years. Their modern iteration is the Barrier Industrial Unions (BIU) Brass Band.This photo shows the Broken Hill City Band when it was still relatively young. It is unknown just how many photos exist of the Broken Hill City Band from this era, however, it is very special to the banding movement.
