John Maclellan founded the Girls' Guild in 1904 with branches in St George's Prahran and Wesley, Lonsdale St. Annual meetings were held at the Prahran Methodist Mission. There were 120 branches which concentrated on gymnastics in winter and choir singing in summer culminating in mass displays of both each year. Activities included interpretive dancing to the music of Gilbert and Sullivan; baseball; tennis; squash; lacrosse; basketball; croquet; rugby football and on Sundays hospital visiting. This undated and unsourced newspaper article is about Girls' Guild which had disbanded 30 years prior to the article being written. It has an image of some past members demonstrating the "Canoe song".girls' guild -

The memorial stone of the UMFC in Church St. Richmond was laid in December 1868. The bluestone church, which seated 308 people, was designed by G.R. Cox and built by John Wright. It was opened in May 1869. By 1890 subsidence in the foundations of the building had caused the bluestone façade to bulge dangerously outwards and a new façade of red and white brick was constructed. The memorial stone of the new façade was laid on 7th June 1890. Robert Edward Davies CBE (30 July 1913 – 17 May 2002) was the Anglican Bishop of Tasmania from 1963 to 1981. Educated at Queensland University, he was ordained in 1937 and began his career as an assistant priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle, NSW. After World War II service as a chaplain with Toc H and the Royal Australian Air Force he became Warden of St John’s College Brisbane. After this he was Archdeacon of Canberra, then Wagga Wagga. He became an assistant bishop of Newcastle and Warden of St John’s Theological College, Morpeth in 1960 and three years later the Tasmanian diocesan bishop.
