Story of fleeing Berlin during Kristallnacht November 1938. Written by a Dunera boy who chose to return in 1942. The ship he was traveling in was torpedoed by a German submarine before he could reach England. Book A5 in size, soft cover, black, red and grey cover. Title is slightly diagonally across front cover in white capital letters. Illustration of a man looking back at a train in the background in grey red and black. Red spine with title in white and name of author grey both in capital letters. Back of the book is a dark purple/red colour with small train illustration at bottom in red and grey. There is a white barcode partially covering the illustration of the train. Gisela Koch was a German internee in camp 3. She was given the box while in Camp 3. Her niece, Dr. Silke Hesse donated the item.Rectangular shaped polished wooden jewellery box, rounded edges. Hinged lid, brass hinges. Medium-light brown coloured wood. Dark green velvet lining inner & on base. Underside of lid is padded underneath velvet. Has tray insert, velvet covered also. Coins produced in the Melbourne Mint especially for use in internment camps throughout Australia. These coins given by family of Donald Reuben Stratford, a former guard at Camp 13, and formerly of WWI tunelling company.3x interment camp coins. 2 x penny, 1 x shilling. Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father, the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koenig, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit.
