Letter - KANGAROO FLAT GOLD MINE COLLECTION: WESTERN MINING CORPORATION TO J.O. REYNOLDS, 11th June 1980
Letter addressed to D. McClure, M.L.A., June 11th, 1980 from Western Mining Corporation Limted. Letter outlines the plan to 'use a commercial elevator rather than a winding system for placing tourists into the underground exhibition'. Western Mining Corporation intended to make a donation to fund this venture but 'the money involved is rather more than we had in mind'. The original quote was $45,000 but is going to be in the range of $200,000 to $300,000. A two page file note on a telephone conversation between Daryl McClure and J.O. TTY means a Text Telephone, or is sometimes referred to as a Telephone typewriter or telecommunication device for the Deaf. TTY is the more widely accepted term, however, many people use TTYs, not just people who are deaf. A TTY is a special device that lets people who are deaf, hearing impaired, or speech-impaired use the telephone to communicate, by allowing them to type messages back and forth. With early TTY models (such as in the photos) you set a telephone handset onto special acoustic cups built into the TTY. As you type, the message is sent over the telephone line, just as your voice would be sent over the telephone line if you talked. You can read the other person's response on the TTY's text display.These photos are significant as they record the introduction of TTY technology at Vicdeaf. TTY technology is a text-based system for communicating over phone lines and its introduction made the deaf and hearing impaired less isolated. The ceramic insulators were used by the PMG to insulate telephone lines connecting to the lightstation accommodation. The installation of a single galvanised wire telegraph line in 1873 provided the lightstation with a vital link to the outside world via Morse code. In 1875, the Australasian Sketcher reported on the new facility, writing that ‘the lighthouse on the extreme point of the promontory is connected with Melbourne by a line of telegraph, and as a large number of vessels pass in sight of the lighthouse, useful information is gained respecting their movements’.The system was immobilised in 1885 when a thunderstorm caused some of the poles to explode and connection wires to fuse and turn into molten metal. During WWII the lighthouse line was upgraded to four copper wires, and in 1971 a radio link replaced the line. The lines required constant maintenance. Some poles remain along the length of the promontory’s Telegraph Track as reminders of this former communication link. Insulators can also be found in the collections at Cape Schanck; Cape Otway and Gabo Island. Comprises a white ceramic insulator attached to a rectangular metal plate. -

Telephones x 3 (GILS 0001, 0038, 0070; attached fixtures) There are three, black Bakelite, wall mounted, crank handle telephones across the lightstation; one in the former assistant keeper’s quarters, and two in the former head keeper’s quarters. The phone has instructions for its use on the crank dial. Two have acoiled handset cord, which dates the phone to just after 1949 when these came into use. The third has a smooth cord and must pre date 1949 (GILS 0070). Another much older wallmounted phone remains in the lighthouse (GILS 0041; attached fixture; see above 6.1). The four telephones at Gabo Island formed an intercom system that facilitated communication between the lighthouse and lightstation buildings. They demonstrate the necessity for employing various methods of communication in a remotely located lighthouse as well as communication between the lightstation buildings. Telephones of the same wall mounted, crank dial type remain at Cape Otway and Point Hicks As fixtures, the telephones belong to the building fabric and are included in the existing listing of the Gabo Island Lightstation in the Victorian Heritage Register (H1773). The lightstation was connected by telephone to Cann River in 1928. The lighthouse retains ablack Bakelite telephone attached to the lantern room wall on timber box mount. It has a crank handle with instructions for its use on the crank dial, and a coiled handset cord, which probably dates the phone to just after 1949 when coiled examples like these began to replace fabric covered smooth cords. An image in 1991 shows the phone in the lower level of the lantern room It is one of four telephones at the lightstsation; with two others attached to walls in the assistant keepers’ quarters, and one in the head keeper’s quarters. The four phones formed an intercom system that facilitated communication between the lightstation buildings.
