A sculpture of an Australian Digger that was produced as a commemorative piece by a Melbourne firm called Ceramic Innovations. It is filled with Tawny Port and is part of a wider set of bar pieces. The three pieces held at Melbourne Legacy are tributes to the three armed forces and are called 'Digger', 'RAAFIE' and 'Jack Tar'. They were once in the comradeship room and now stored in the archive. The small one roomed school is closed at the site along the Calder Highway and was relocated to the new school building in Plumpton Road at Diggers Rest. The Returned Sailors and soldiers Imperial League of Australia was formed in 1916. Annual RSSAILA Balls (originally known as the Diggers Balls) were held to raise funds for those who returned fromconflicts especially those who were not eligible for war pensions.Socially , the ‘Diggers’ Annual Ball’ accomplished a great deal in bringing Returned Servicemen together. A drawing done by artist Pat Hanna and sent to friends at Legacy. He was living in London at the time and drew this on his letterhead. It was stored with other items including a letter to Frank in 1972 (possibly L/- Frank Doolan who was making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project - see items 01400 to 01403). Pat Hanna was an entertainer, comedian, artist and producer of reveues, plays and movies. One of his first revues was performed in France just after the armistice. A popular stage show was 'Diggers' that performed around Australia post-war and adapted to film in 1931. He was asked to pose for photographer Jack Cato for the iconic image of a digger shown in 01400. He was born George Patrick Hanna, 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand and served in the First World War, was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and was involved with Legacy for many years. Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and an artist and producer. During World War One Tim Tovell of the No. 4 Squadron RAAF befriended a French orphan known as Henri or Digger. The child became an unofficial mascot, was given a custom made AIF uniform, and at the end of the war was smuggled back to Australia. As an adult Henri was killed in a car accident and is buried at Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria. Members of the No 4 Squadron subscribed for a memorial stone.Five black and white image. 2004 was the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade. The 'Eureka Stockade Diggers' March' was part of the 150th anniversary. The certificate was collected by Kathleen Gervasoni, Great Grand-daughter of Michael O'Dea who was associated with those at Eureka in 1854.Yellow card certificate with blue writing. The front features an image of Charles Doudiet's 'Swearing Allegiance to the Southern Cross', and the recerse shows a map of the 2004 Diggers' March Route and a facsimile of a gold license.
