These chairs originate from St Andrews Kirk, Ballarat, c1870s. The Rev William Henderson, Presbyterian Minister of Ballarat (1857 - 1886), founded Ballarat College in 1864. The chairs were is use in St Andrews Kirk during his tenure. At this time Ballarat College was situated in the grounds of St Andrews Kirk and remained there until 1912. In 1995 a plaque to this effect was erected in the grounds of St Andrews Kirk, and unveiled by Old Collegian and school Council member, Kenneth D Baird. This is a token of appreciation to Rev William Charles J. Peart who was leaving the Wodonga-Bethanga Methodist Circuit to serve King and country. He was minister of the Wodonga-Bethanga circuit in 1914 from where he enlisted in the Light Horse. He afterwards became a gunner in the Field Artillery and was severely gassed, from which he never really recovered. He spent time in hospital and on his return to Australia his circuits were Drouin, Footscray and Merbein. He then had to request leave of absence for six months owing to war disabilities. He was able to return to the ministry. Before enlisting he married Doris Quick who came out of the Daylesford Circuit. The war left a legacy of suffering and limitation with Mr Peart, but he showed a brave face and a steady heart. Paper testimonial mounted on card. The text is gold and there is an image of a draped Australian flag in the top right corner. President of the Australasian Conference 1866. President of Horton College at Ross, Tasmania. Founder and President of the Council of Queen's College, University of Melbourne. William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950. Reverend William ‘Bill’ Leslie Higgins (b. 15/1/1925, Renmark, Victoria, d. 18/10/1998) and Mrs Ella May Higgins (née Leersen b. 3/11/1921, Avoca, Victoria, d. 24/5/2003). William was ordained to the Methodist Church of Australia on September 1, 1959. Bill and Ella were involved with many communities throughout Bill’s full-time service until 1989. These parishes included Underbool, Wycheproof, Drysdale, Wonthaggi, South Yarra, Eltham, Nathalia, Murchison and Seymour. Bill and Ella touched many thousands lives during their ministry. Bill passed away in 1998 while assisting with a Sunday evening service near Drysdale, and Ella continued to dedicate her time to others until her death in 2003. Information received via Brian and Irene Robertson's son, Mark (15 Dec 2023), noted that in 1969 they lived in Prahran and by 1971 they would have been appointed to Briar Hill (now Greensborough). Brian Robertson's parents and at least one set of his grandparents were also Salvation Army officers (primarily from Victoria), whilst Irene was originally from Perth and she had 2 other sisters that became Salvation Army Officers as well. Irene also had 3rd sister and younger brother who were linked to the Salvos (as was Brian’s brother). After several years in church work, Brian and Irene transferred over to the Social Services branch of the Salvos and worked with homeless men, broken families, drug & alcohol dependent clients (similar to what Brendan Nottle does in Burke St), family stores and eventually seniors (nursing homes). Brian, known as Robbie passed away in 2013, and Irene is currently living in a retirement unit. The foundation stone of the New Wesleyan Church, Were Street, Brighton, Victoria was laid by Mrs W P Wells, the wife of the Superintendent of the Brighton Circuit and President of the Victorian Wesleyan Conference in 1887. The foundation stone was temporarily removed in the late 1930s and the 1937 publication "Were Street Jubilee" details the "proposed Jubilee Church". The same trowel was used when the stone was re-laid in 1955 at the beginning of the construction on the new church. S060.1 Silver commemorative trowel with a bone handle. They were particularly popular in both Australian and New Zealand during the early 20th century. They were particularly common during and after World War I when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. It is currently the only photo in the collection of a social event connected to Our Holy Redeemer Church and the only one which includes Dr William M Collins who was the parish priest from 1933-1941. Dr Collins was a significant figure in the Catholic Church in Melbourne in the first half of the 20th century. REF: The Advocate: The first priest-editor by Fiona Power; Kairos Catholic Journal Volume 22, Issue 16. - 2 September 2011": Summary: Born in Kilmore in 1884, William Collins attended South Melbourne College and then the University of Melbourne, where he assisted in the formation of the Newman Society of Victoria. After graduating in arts in 1911, he worked at the Melbourne Public Library and the Education Department. In 1912, at the age of 28, he went to Rome, where he studied for the priesthood at Urban College. He obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology and was ordained on 3 June 1917. He returned to Melbourne and was appointed curate at St Mary’s, West Melbourne, and St Francis’, Lonsdale Street. In 1918, Dr Collins became editor of The Advocate. He remained in the role for seven years. Dr Collins was parish priest of Dandenong, Daylesford, East Malvern, Surrey Hills and Kew, and administrator at St Francis’. He died in 1959 and a Requiem Mass was held at Sacred Heart, Kew. Black and white photo of the participants in the Queen Carnival arranged on a stage in a tableaux of the coronation of the Queen.
