These photographs were taken by Caroline Winter, lecturer at the University of Ballarat. Horace Pickford was born at Clunes, Victoria. He was killed in action on 27 September 1917. According to his dossier Pickford was in the 58th battalion and was buried in the vicinity of Polygon Wood. Glyndwr Evans was a native of Treorchy in the Welsh Rhondda Valley. He emigrated to Australia with his parents who lived at Randwick in New South Wales. He attended the Ballarat School of Mines, and served on the Student's Magazine Committee in 1905. The following year Glyndwr took up a position as a solutionist at the Golden Horseshoe Mine at Kalgoorlie. In the application for a commission in the AIF Glyndwr stated at he had completed three years at the Ballarat School of Mines, obtaining a Mine Manager's Certificate of Competancy, an Assayers Certificate and additional certificates in Land Surveying, Electrical Technology, Metallurgy and Geology. Gyndwr was a member of the AIF 1st Australian Tunnelling Coy. He was killed in Action at Hill 60 on 25 April 1917 and is buried in Belgium at the Railway Dugout Burial Ground (Plot VII, Row G, Grave 33). John Raymond (Ray) Blight enlisted on 19 July 1915. He was an electrical engineer, having studied at the Ballarat School of Mines. On 23 June 1916 Ray Blight disembarked at Marseilles. 3 February 1917 he was hospitalised with scabies. Ray Blight's next of kin was his mother, Mary Jane Blight of 116 Lyons Street South, Ballarat. James Leslie Sim enlisted on 13 July 1915, at which time he was an accountant. His next of kin was his father, Charles Robert Sim of Drummond Street North, Ballarat. On 23 June 1916 James Sim disembarked at Marseilles. A year later he received leave to the United Kingdom returning to France 2 weeks later. He received leave to Paris from 18 march 1918 to 4 April 1918. Sim was wounded on 1 June 1918.Two World War One soldiers in military uniform pose for a photograph. The two men are Lance Corporal Ray Blight and Lance Corporal Sim (both of Ballarat). On the back is a personal letter to Ballarat School of Mines Lecturer Daniel Walker. The pin holes in the postcard suggest it was displayed at the Ballarat School of Mines. .1) Verso: " France 25/8/16. Dear Mr Walker, Just a line in sending a photo we had taken in a small photographers, in a town within range of the evenings guns, the other boy is L/Corp Sim, one time an old SMB and son of R. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 2. Replicas include different campaign stars and the Defence Medal and Active Service Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and cap band from HMAS Sydney. The Rising Sun badge and badges for Return from Active Service and a RAAF emblem. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. The boards were on display in the Melbourne Legacy Foyer cabinets until June 2017.A record that Legacy holds some war memorabilia as Legatees were once solely returned servicemen.Replica medals from World War 2 mounted on silk inserts into green boards plus additional badges and cap band.Title inscribed in brass plaques say World War 2, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Burma Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. Medal, Victory Medal World War One, 1919
The Victory medal was awarded to all Allied servicemen and women who served in World War One. Australians were issued with the medal made for British service personnel. The medal described above was awarded to Private Thomas Wickham. He was born in Port Fairy in 1886 and died in Warrnambool in 1955. Private Wickham enlisted in February 1916 and his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth, living at that time in Terang. Thomas Wickham was a member of the 58th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement. He served overseas and returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit because of rheumatism. This is a round bronze medal with the image of a winged female figure of Victory on the obverse side and engraved lettering surrounded by laurel leaves on the reverse side. As part of a program to acknowledge the Anzac Centenary Nillumbik Shire Council partnered with Yarra Plenty Regional Library to provide a bus tour with commentary of local sites of significance. These included Eltham township, the Shire of Eltham War Memorial at Kangaroo Ground, Christmas Hills war memorial, Hurstbridge memorial recreation park and finshed at Eltham Library to view the Writing the War exhibtion at Eltham Library Community Gallery. World War 2 Soldiers’ Memorial 1999. "In remembrance WW2 and Korean War, Malaysia, Borneo, Vietnam". The unveiling ceremony of the memorial was held on Sunday Nov 4th, 1956, by Lieutenant Edmond Herring. KCMG. DSO. MC. EO. The ceremony was dedicated "To the men of Stawell and District who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War 2 and Korean War. Two black & white photos taken in 1999 of World War 2 memorial. One photo an enlargement of the other. The memorial includes a list of all these who served in World War 2 and sits in a garden bed.
