Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. September 1922. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This letter is significant because it reflects the relationship between Bob Hymans and the Management Committee.A letter from the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee inviting representatives of clubs and organisations having established facilities at Falls Creek to meet with the Committee. The depicted Ballarat School of Mines Assaying Furnace probably dates back to the mid 1890s. The photo first appears in the Ballarat School of Mines Calendar for 1900, but references to these facilities were mentioned in 1887. These facilities were updated and expanded on several occasions. Black and white photograph of the assay furnaces at the Ballarat School of Mines. The Assay-room contained 16 smelting furnaces, 16 muffle furnaces fro coke, charcoal, bituminous coal and gas, and featured all the usual tools and appliances. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed by the merging of the State College of Victoria at Ballarat (SCVB) and the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE). The parent body of BIAE was the Ballarat School of Mines, founded in 1870 to train personnel for mining activities. The first awards at diploma level were made in 1896 in the branches of English, Metallurgy and Geology. Over the years the range of courses broadened to include Art, Physics, Business Studies, Humanities and Librarianship. The tertiary division of the School of Mines was relocated to Mount Helen in 1970. The SCVB was established in 1925 by the Education Department as the Ballarat Teachers' College. It was one of two provincial teachers' colleges to be established. The first courses were concerned with primary teaching and manual arts but later the subject areas of Physical Education, Environmental Sciences, Music, Art and Craft became major strengths. The merger took place in 1976 and by 1980 all staff were located at the Mount Helen Campus. In 1988 Student accomdation included: * Mount Helen - 290 individual furnished study/bedrooms arranged in units of ten to fourten rooms. $64.05 including 4 evening meals * Gillies Street - 56 individaul study/bedrooms in two blocks each containing kitchen/dining room areas, a common room, as well as bathroom areas. Does not include meals. $37.80 per week. * Beaufort House - Managed by the Education Department, with BCAE playing a coordinating role in the placement of students. 75 single and shared accomodation with full board (14 meals per week) $73.80 per week * Nurses' Home - Ballarat Base Hospital authorities made approximately 100 individual study/bedrooms availabel to female students. "Extracts from Recent Daily Newspaper - Ringwood Train Service - STATION WANTED AT RINGWOOD EAST. A deputation from the Ringwood East Railway League and Progress Association waited on the chairman of the Railway Commissioners yesterday afternoon and asked that a railway station be erected at Dublin-road, a mile and a quarter from Ringwood. The deputation urged that there were 81 passengers who, if the station were provided, would make daily use of it, and that as the Commissioners had purchased a site for a station at Dublin-road it was evident they had at one time considered it the most suitable site. The Chairman of Commissioners stated that the estimated cost of the station was £3700. Land owners in the locality should pay a proportion of the cost. This plaque commemorates the official opening of the liveweight selling facilities at the Wodonga Municipal Saleyards, named the W. G. Page Saleyards, in 1980. Liveweight selling usually involves a curfew where cattle have to be at the saleyard by a specific time before the sale in order for them to be weighed prior to auction. Cattle that do not make the curfew time are sold on a $/head basis. The last sales at this facility took place in February 2015 before being replaced by the privately-run Barnawartha North's Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange. William George Page was Shire and City Engineer in Wodonga from 1965 until 1989. When he arrived the Shire of Wodonga had a population of 17,000 people. In 1966 Wodonga was selected as a city for special growth assistance. In 1972 Bill Page presented a new Town Plan to the Wodonga Council. Over the ensuing years he dedicated himself to bring this plan to fruition. He often had to argue and campaign with the Albury-Wodonga Corporation to push for the interests of development in Wodonga. This included winning a planning appeal to allow the saleyards to be relocated to Bandiana on the outskirts of Wodonga. Bill Page retired on health grounds in July 1989. The Council honoured him with a farewell dinner and renamed the saleyards at Bandiana the W.G. Page Saleyards in his honour.The Mayor , Cr Valentina Gillard, said "Every development in Wodonga in the past 24 years has a bit of Bill Page in it". William Page died 3 months later at 58 years old.A bronze forged metal plaque with detailed inscription.
