Sign, Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA), "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car", 1950's
Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". The signs were received wrapped in part of the "The Age, Thursday March 23 1961" - sample retained - see image 4. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Photo of SEC Ballarat trams waiting in Lydiard St. North for the passengers to travel on the ARHS/ TMSV specials on Saturday 21/8/1971 to undertake the last tour of Ballarat Tramways, prior to the closure of the system. The first line closure (Victoria St.) took place the following day. The organising group is discussing the arrangements with the SEC tramway inspector. Pamphlet - full colour - folded A3 - "The Melbourne Tram", giving details of the proposed tourist tram service that was to be effective Oct. 1992. On the inside has a map showing the proposed routes, a morning and afternoon tour, fares and how to book. Has a image of Y 469 on the front cover. Randal advised that Y469 was painted dark green very briefly in 1992 - an initiated of the Kirner Government to operate "The Melbourne Tram" as a tourist service.
