From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. 'A record of an intermediate Legacy Conference in 1948. This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. He was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was more than one concert party in Changi as indicated on the rear of the violin. The details of the Dutch, British and American Concert Parties scratched in to the varnish. There are the some well known names scratched into the violin including: The English author and cartoonist, Ronald Searle; Australian entertainer, Frank Rich; and Australian Author, Russell Braddon. Mr Arnel died in 1982 and the violin was presented to Melbourne Legacy for preservation, safe keeping and display. Further research found that one of the AIF comedians, Harry Smith, had a catch phrase, 'You'll never get off the Island' which became almost the watchword of the prisoners throughout the captivity. In the early 1920s Australia was gifted six J class submarines from the Royal Navy. These were the latest and largest submarines built by the RN for service in World War I. They were competent but were in service with the Royal Navy for only a short time before the end of the war. Once in Australia they were placed into service but there was little appetite for submarines or in fact any other military endeavour in the early ‘twenties’. The world was exhausted from a long and dirty war followed by a devastating Influenza Epidemic. On the 18th August, 1896, the question of selecting localities for the permanent survey of a narrow-gauge line to Beech Forest from Colac was mooted. Two potential lines were examined. In a memorandum to the Minister for Railways, dated 23rd March, 1897, the Engineer-in-Chief recommended that the eastern and longer route via Lardner's Track be adopted. The second route, while identical from Colac to Gellibrand River, differed. By a more direct route the Beech Forest terminus is reached 5 miles sooner and cost approximately L24,500 less. The direct line would also serve a larger lot of settlers and would obtain a larger lot of traffic than the alternate proposal. The Parlimentary Standing Committee on Railways examined the proposal in situ and recommended that the direct route from Gellibrand to Beech Forest should be adopted and the Lardner's Track route should be abandoned at once.Photograph, Railway Survey Camp, 4 April 1897. Four ladies standing on the rock as the seaside, Doreen, Nora, Lila, and Rita, all dressed in white, the second and third are carrying darker coloured coats on their arms, Queenscliff 1921.Leonie dressed in white and holding a black hat with both hands, background shows trellis and weather boards, left foreground may be heap of cut wood. Frank is sitting on steps dressed in white shirt, dark waistcoat, and dark trousers, background is brick wall and handrail attached to the steps. Four ladies in four wheel tourist coach owned by J. L. Priddle, the two at the front are both wearing white, lady to the left also is wearing a dark coat and scarf, the ladies at the rear are both wearing dark tops and the lady on the outer is wearing a white dress. The background appears to be covered on shrubbery. A purple plastic display box with a clear plastic lid. it has ten compartments containing items made from metal, wood and ceramics. a: Five pieces of pipes made from clay wood and metal decoration. b: Clay pipe with a metal decoration. c: Four pieces of metal jewelry one to two centimeters in diameter Including a ring, a flower brooch, a pendant and a button. d: Metal button two in diameter with an inscription Warranted Superior and a coat of arms. e: Two metal badges both have ship's anchors on them, one is three centimeters round the other is five centimeters by four centimeters. g: small piece of jewelry made of metal and glass five centimeters long and two centimeters wide. h: Four pieces of hollow metal five to eight centimeters long and one centimeter diameter. i: A piece of hollow metal tube five centimeters long and one centimeter in diameter.
