Tool - Mallet, Prior to 1950
Wooden mallets are usually used in carpentry or by a cooper to knock wooden pieces together, or to drive barrel bungs, dowels or chisels. A wooden mallet will not deform the striking end of a metal tool, as most metal hammers would. It is also used to reduce the force driving the cutting edge of a chisel, giving better control. Household, Pair of Over-Shoes, 1940s
These over shoes or galoshes would have been worn by a woman wishing to protect the high-heel shoes she was wearing at the time. They would have been used in wintry weather or when walking over rough and wet country roads or tracks, perhaps when going dancing or to a function of some sort. With the advent of common car use and better roads, this type of over-shoe would no longer be used today. These shoes are of interest as examples of the footwear worn by women in the mid 20th century to protect lighter and more fragile shoes. This is a pair of black rubber over-shoes or galoshes for wearing over high-heeled shoes. They have moulded rubber soles with high heels, rubber uppers with a flap to cover the ankles and an opening with two metal press studs with black button tops. The inside is lined with light brown cloth. ‘Dunlop’ ‘DZM’ ‘LZA’ women’s fashions, history of warrnambool -

butter churn, 1890 ?
Used domestically, though any extra butter would have been sold to neighbours. Many families kept a cow or two for milk etc. Cream needed to be at least 2 days old - the thicker the better. The handle was turned until the cream turned to butter, the whey was poured off and the butter washed in cold water until the water ran clear. Generally salt and bicarbonate of soda were added. Two pats were used to form butter into 1lb lots. This was used by Mrs (1890-1980) Carl Wehner who was the son of the blacksmith Herman Wehner. Commonly known as Miner's Complaint, silicosis, tuberculosis or a combination of both resulted in phthisis. This was directly caused by the inhalation of silica dust resulting from drilling into quartz reefs. Lungs weakened by silicosis were more susceptible to the TB bacterium. At first the difference between these two ailments was unknown as was the mode of the spread of TB. In 1903 there was a call for better ventilation in mines and for the use of water hoses to dampen down the dust. It is estimated that the rate of associated deaths in Bendigo was six times that of the national average.A 12 page paper by Frank Cusack detailing the extreme rates of death by Silicosis and Tuberculosis among the early settlers of Bendigo and the willful lack of action by the mine managers to improve health and safety.frank cusack, silicosis, tuberculosis, bendigo mining -

LU 600 1947 Austin Tanker
LU 600 the first of the Small Town Units, designed and built by the Country Fire Authority. (CFA) The late Wally Titheridge, Chief Mechancal Officer of the Country Fire Brigades Board, CFBB, and its successor the CFA, stated in an interview in the early 1990's that the vehicle was designed by himself, and built by a body builder in Preston. This was the first of many hundreds of the Small Town Units, on maily Austin, but also Bedford, Leyland, and BMC Chassis. The early series trucks had a 200 gallon (900 Litre) tank, which was proving usefull, but "more is always better" , so the next series had 400 gallon (1000 litre) tanks.
