The origin and owner of this album are unknown but the name’ Vickers’ suggests some local connection. There are twelve photographs of people and twenty-nine photographs of buildings and scenes, mostly of places in England (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire). The photographers’ names listed are from Nottingham. The photographs probably date from the 1860s and 1870s. This is most likely an album of some significance as the name ‘Vickers’ on the inside cover of this album suggests that the photographs belonged to the Vickers family. Robert Vickers, who came from Nottingham, was a farmer at Summerside in Panmure in the 1860s, 70s and 80s so the photographs in the album are likely to be of his family members. The life buoy from the Largs Bay located above the bar helps dating the photograph to post 1957: Largs Bay was launched in 1921, as a mixed passenger/cargo ship. During WW2 she took part in a large number of convoys.nIt was scrapped in 1957 so had a service life of 36 years. Her sister ships were Jervis Bay, Moreton Bay, Esperance Bay and Hobsons Bay. She carried many passengers to Australia to start new lives after WW2. Date of the photograph is not known. Criterion House was built by Samuel Steele in 1862/1863. Samuel Steele left Linton in the late 1860s, but it is not known if B. N. Dodd was the next owner of the building. B. N. Dodd was mentioned in advertising as a Linton draper in 1878. He sold the shop and moved to Ballarat in 1887. The upper floor of the building was used as a hospital from around the end of WWI to the early 1920s. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. Thomas John Kent (b. 1/9/18, d. 13/3/1998) married Florence Janet Hughes (b. 5/1/1921, d. 24/3/2011) on 15/11/1941. In the 1943 Electoral Roll they were recorded living at Watson St, McLeod and in 1949 at Mt. View Road, Montmorency. (Information gathered from Ancestry.com sources). The heritage listed Fairfield Bridge was originally constructed for the Outer Circle Railway to bridge the Yarra River between East Kew and Fairfield stations. In the 1930s it was converted for vehicular traffic. In the 2010s a new concrete bridge was erected beside it to increase vehicular capacity.Print copy, enlarged from original snapshot, of the former railway viaduct crossing the Yarra and linking Kew and Fairfield. Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of mayors and town clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989.
