Diggers & Mining. Diggers and miners. From the middle 1850's on, there was a gradual development of gold mining in Victoria. (Remember that while the first stage of this, development was going on, tens of thousands of diggers were still working on old diggings, or rushing new fields. See earlier maps.) Diggers & Mining: The Digging - The Diggers. Slide; When a Gold field shows signs of permanency, the Government surveyed a site for a township on the field. The story of the rise of these towns is told in Unit II of this series. Smalll businesses - some of them conducted by diggers who had done well on the fields - were established in these towns. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. STORES AT THE DIGGINGS, c1852
Diggers & Mining. Stores at the diggings. One grievance of the diggers on the early fields was the high cost of most commodities. Prices were rising all over Victoria, but they rose even more steeply at the diggings, because, with drays and bullock-drivers at a premium, and with the roads in a bad state, the cost of cartage to the fields rose rapidly. Slide - Walkers Bus line Buses in the depot, 1970s - 1980s
The BCSV (see link under references below) records show that Walker's bought the services of R Houlden of Bendigo in January 1966. It is unclear just what involvement, if any, Walker had in buses before this time. We know that there were two Houldens in Bendigo, R and T. The first, R Houlden seems to have acquired the services of Johnston's Bus services around the early 60s. Walker's also acquired the services of J.L.Holland's BS in 1970 and W.E.Shaw in 1972. Here are some pics from the early 50s through to the late 70s:Walkers Bus line Buses in the depot and the Ordnance sign (obviously a mistake in the spelling at some stage) history, bendigo, bus, john theodore collection, houlden buses bendigo, walkers buses bendigo -

Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE GOLD LICENCE, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. The gold licence. The Government Camp. As well as government escorts, there were a few private gold escort companies operating in the early 1850s. One of them carried gold from the Ovens diggings to Sydney. In 1852, the South Australian government established a gold escort service between Mount Alexander and Adelaide. Why? Slide - DIGGERS & MINING: THE DIGGINGS - THE DIGGERS
Diggers & Mining: The Diggings - The Diggers. Slide reads: Nearly all of the early Victorians diggings (prior) to the widespread adoption of deep skinking on some fields) presented an appearance something like this. There was the stream, lined with men feverishly washing for gold; behind this was the field proper, honeycombed with claims; behind this again were the tents and huts of the diggers, what stores there were, and - perhaps - in a clearing, the headquarters of a Commissioner. The following frames show Tulloch's drawings of three of the diggings in 1851. Markings: 2 994.LIF 6. Used as a teaching aid.hanimounteducation, tertiary, mining -

However, the picture they give may be taken as fairly typical of the other diggings of the time, and, in some respects, of the early stages in the development of other fields later in the gold era. Photograph - Glass Slide Photos of Bendigo, Early 1900s
Bendigo followed much the same pattern as Ballarat, and was not ready for an up-to-date studio until 1880 when the Bartlett Bros. (Francis and Henry) who bad conducted a successful business in Melbourne for many years opened a small studio there. It was such a success that they decided to build large modern premises, and Francis made two trips to England and the Continent for the latest ideas. In 1884 Henry died, and to replace him, Francis secured the services of Robert W. Bugg, then employed by Foster & Martin (both pupils of Batchelder's) in Collins Street, Melbourne. In that studio Bugg made some fine portraits of Anthony Trollope during the novelist's long tour of Australia. Francis Bartlett was a keen business man, and Robert Bugg was a great operator and a fine painter. Together, their success was quite outstanding. Fifteen years later Bartlett retired with a fortune, and Bugg took over the studio. Robert William Bugg, one of our leading Painter-Photographers, was born in London in 1853, and came to Melbourne when he was five years old. He became a pupil of Louis Buvelot and, in 1879, a member of the Victorian Academy of Arts. In Bendigo he gave annual exhibitions of his oils and water colours, a number of his exhibitions being officially opened by his friend Alfred Deakin. There are a number of Bugg's Paintings in the Bendigo Art Gallery. All the portraits, landscapes, buildings, and city views illustrated in "Bendigo and Vicinity, 1897", are from photographs taken by Robert Bugg. He was a clever, genial and popular soul, and his influence on the cultural life of his adopted city was considerable. He retired in 1932 and died in his early eighties.Eleven Photos of Bendigo from Glass Plate Negatives, Campaspe River at Axedale, Axe Creek, Lake Weroona, White Hills Botanical Gardens, Conseratory Gardens, Bendigo Fernery.
