The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Excerpt of George Russell's Manuscript Diary copied by William Lewis. George Russell, from Scotland joined his brother Philip in 1831 in Tasmania, and farmed there for five years under his supervision. He then followed John Batman's exploratory lead to Port Phillip in March 1836. George Russell later established Golf Hill Station at Shelford. These memoirs describe first visits by Europeans to Lal Lal falls (which weren't running) and Mt Buninyong. These records must have been sought out by the AHRS as Russell had died before the Society was established.

Marianne Hardridge married James Maggs and had 11 children. They began orcharding on Wonga Road when there was nothing but bush. Over the years it became one of the largest orchards, and they were also one of the largest families in the district. As well as helping on the land Marianne took up nursing and as Nurse Maggs brought over 500 children into the world in the Ringwood area. This is the third edition of "Personalities and Stories of Early Orbost which was collected and compiled by Mary Isabelle Gilbert. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert. She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community This edition was organised by the Orbost & District Tourist Association. Extra photographs in this edition were supplied by the Orbost Historical Society and the Orbost Shire lent money towards the project.This is a significant reference book on the history of the Orbost district.A 141 pp soft-covered bound book with a pale blue cover. A community group project steered by Bambi McLean led to the construction of the Eltham North Adventure Playground which opened off Wattletree Road in 1995. The structure was mainly wooden and included an undercover element with slides and areas to climb. It was destroyed by fire in the early hours of 16 December 2017. These phtoos were taken at approx. 2am on the morning of 16 December 2017 by 2nd Lieutenant Anthony Owen of Eltham Fire Station. This book shows a collection of pictures from the days of the earliest settlement of Box Hill through to the 1930s. They show us the clearing of land for the establishment of farms and orchards. We see the early Whitehorse Road which was known as Corduroy Road because of the logs that formed its surface.This publication, originally suggested by Betty Walters, a former Mayor of the City, portrays the evolution of the central area of the City, from the first settlers to 1930. Undated anecdotes by an anonymous author (by the handwriting it was Legatee Frank Doolan) about Melbourne Legacy changeover dinners at the Federal Hotel on the corner of Collins and King Streets. These were apparently convivial affairs and the writer shares his memories of three occasions. The first occasion was an impromptu and riotous performance by Legatees (organised by Pat Hanna) after the dinner of the First World War ballad 'Roses of Picardy'. The second occasion concerned a group of 'exuberant' Legatees walking down Collins Street after dinner who spotted Harry Lauder [1870-1950], the famous Scottish comedian, in a taxi which was held up at a street crossing'. They prevailed on him to speak at the Legacy luncheon the following Tuesday. Lauder's subsequent speech at the luncheon not only amused the listeners with his humour, but also reduced them to sadness with an account of how his son had been killed in action in France. The third story refers to 'a vacant hansom cab pulled up in Collins St as the diners were departing', which induced one Legatee to fulfil a lifelong ambition by persuading the cabby to let him drive the cab for the princely sum of one pound. Blanche Shallard (nee Everard) (1905-2002) was an active member of the Montmorency community from 1933 when she and her husband Jack Shallard settled there. She volunteered for many community groups including the Diamond Valley Community Hospital, Greensborough, local schools and churches and the Eltham District Historical Society. Jean Spence and her husband Geoffrey were also residents of Montmorency.
