Walter Magilton left school early to become a dairy farmer in Western Victoria, returned to school and became a secondary school art teacher, eventually becoming an artist full-time, a painter, sculptor and jewellery maker. His paintings are in collections overseas and Australia. He teaches art from his Stony Creek Studio in Warrandyte and married to contemporary installation artist Denise Keele-bedford. In the 2009 Black Saturday fires, he led eastern metropolitan CFA volunteers and was awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal as part of the 2011 Australia Day Awards. He was a CFA volunteer for more than 30 years, a CFA employee for 15 years, and had served with Victoria Police for 18 years. He is a member of the Yarrambat Historical Society, Yarrambat CFA and the Greensborough Hockey Club. He lives at Yarrambat. Bob Manuel was director of Briar Hill Timber and Hardware, started in 1934 by Bob's father-in-law, Fred Squire, a pioneering building at Briar Hill, and his wife Hazel. Bob was hired in 1956 when 90 worked for the firm; that number grew to 430 during World War II, including the sawmill in the Otways. Later it provided much of the timber for Melbourne's Olympic Village. Bob and wife Lorraine were retiring to travel, and visit children Robert, Sally, Janet and Catherine. Chris Marks studied at RMIT, and was an artist. She also contributed to the art and cultural life of Eltham Shire (later Nillumbik shire,) encouraging its artists at all levels. She was curator of collections for Nillumbik Council from 1991 to 2006. She died 19 April 2007. She was married to John, their children Bianca and Ben. Marguerite Marshall, Eltham resident, worked as a journalist in the Diamond Valley from around 1980. In 2002, she published "Nillumbik Now and Then", about the shire's landmarks and characters (an update of "Eltham Shire, Historic Buildings, People and Places" 1983). It had photographs b Alan King and covered the Wurundjeri people, the Batman Tree legend, farmers, bushranger, gold mining, soldiers, artists, environmentalists and sportspeople. She was an environmental activist who created a comic character to show there can be a humorous side to the environmental challenge (Eartha Waters, a green tragic) for Nillumbik Climate Action Now event at Eltham Library. Robert Marshall grew up on a small farm in Panton Hills in the 1950s and became an architect, designing in an Australian style, sometimes working with Alistair Knox. Marshall first stood for local council in 1974, having to overcome a childhood stutter by relaxation techniques. He was active in the formation of Nillumbik shire; after 20 years as councillor, he was elected president for 1978 and 1979. In February 1997, his adopted son Stewart Anthony Marshall died as the result of a drug mix-up. He lived in St Andrews and his business was in Hurstbridge.
