These medals were issued by the Australian Government to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 of England in 1953.These medals are of minor interest as ones issued in 1953 to celebrate he Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 of England. They have no known local significance. These are ten medals with lettering and the Coat of Arms of Australia on one side and an image of Queen Elizabeth 11 and lettering on the other side. It was Awarded for 3 years, 360, 180 or 90 days, depending on area and nature of serviceThe medal is cupro-nickel, with the uncrowned effigy of King George VI on the obverse. The reverse has a conventional oak tree centrally, with a crown above, with two lions counter rampart as supporters between the dates 1939 and 1945. The base of the medal reverse has the words ‘THE DEFENCE MEDAL’. The ribbon is orange with green outer stripes, each green stripe having a black pin-stripe running down the centre. The green represents the Islands of the United Kingdom, the orange represents enemy attacks, and the black represents the black outs. The medal is housed in a small cardboard box. This uniform belongs to RAAF Squadron Leader John Haines. The decoration and campaign medals are the Australian Service Medal, Defence Force Service Medal, RAAF Long Service Medals and the UNEF II (Egypt and Israel)John Haines was the President of the Eltham RSL. At a later date he served on the Montmorency RSL.Squadron Leader’s Service Dress Jacket made of blue wool polyester blend with a blue rayon lining. At the top of each sleeve there is a woven insignia of the Royal Australian Air force. It has 4 larger gold RAAF buttons and 2 smaller gold buttons on the front chest pockets. The jacket has two pockets on the lower half of the jacket. On each lower sleeve there is a Squadron Leaders rank insignia. Above the right pocket there is silver name tag. Although the medal is inscribed 'Warrnambool R C' we believe it to be a Warrnambool Bowling Club medal. The Warrnambool Bowls Club gave this medal to W&DHS in 1968 describing it as a medal won by life member William Kucks, club champion in 1895. Also newspaper reports show that William Kucks was the bowls club champion in 1895. No record has been found of William Kucks belonging to either rowing or rifle clubs. William Kucks was a long-time resident of Warrnambool, operating a boarding house in Timor Street in the 1860s and then a bakery in the same street for many years. He served as a town councilor 1899-1901.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of a Warrnambool sporting club in the 1890s and of a well-known 19th century Warrnambool resident and town councilor 1899-1901.This brass star shaped medal has a circular centre with text surrounded by a raised narrow annulus and eight near triangular hollow shapes interspersed with small spheres. on the obverse, The reverse has a metal hook and clip. There is a ring attached to the tip of one of the triangles with a second ring through it. Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day) was on May 8, 1945, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany.
