Junction Hotel Armstrong and Post Office. c1866 In 1864 Mr Neill Bruce, storekeeper of Great Western applied for a publican's license for the building photographed. It had 3 sitting rooms and 5 bedrooms. Mary Kershaw had the license from 1881. Thomas L. Barker & Co in 1890. Two story brick and attached single story weatherboard building with shingle roof. Stawell Post office built in March 1875 replacing the 1860 weather board building in the early Township of Stawell. The stucco exterior was described as modern Italian, and the building had excellent proportions. Special reference was made to the use of slate from Great Western. The foundations are of solid granite. The difference in this photograph to 85.01 would be approximately 100 years. Stawell Post Office possibly before 1880's on Corner of Wimmera and Main Street. The card is significant because it demonstrates linkages between the families of the Lara RSL (the McIntyre's and the Lang's). A small envelope addressed to Mrs J McIntyre with a card from Mr and Mrs Alex Lang and family. On the envelope is a red 1 penny postage stamp, and over the top of this is a blue ink stamp that has worn away (it looks as though it says Cororooke). On the envelope, hand written: Mrs J. McIntyre 'Elcho', Lara On the card, typed: Mr and Mrs Alex Lang and Family desire to return sincere thanks for your kind expressions of sympathy in their recent sad bereavement. Ann Ruston died 1868, aged 75 years. She was the mother of Peter Ruston who came to Australia in 1850. He worked as a carter, carting flour from the mill on the Plenty River near Janefield to the Greensborough area. He married Martha Roberts in 1858.
