Ballarat Clarendon College
Trophy
From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. It is obvious from written records and the inscriptions on the cups themselves that two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup.The Old Collegians Cup was a prestigious award presented in the early days of Ballarat College for private retention. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. Book, Royal Australian Air Force, Standard Notebook for Initial Training Schools: Air Navigation, August 1942
This notebook contains information on air navigation and electrical science. It was issued to Roy Eliason (449852), a Shepparton local who enlisted in 1944 and served as a Leading Aircraftman with the 2nd Operational Training Unit Mildura. Contents include: Appendix I: Law, Discipline, Administration and Organisation, Hygiene and Sanitation, Notes on Meteorology, Definitions, The principles of flight, Airframes, Engine; Appendix II: Mathematics problems for revision. This notebook has significant research potential, as it bears the service number of the owner: Roy Eliason. Roy Eliason's service history is well documented in the National Archives of Australia and this book provides an insight into a period of his service. Notebooks such as this were presumably issued to new recruits in the early stages of their service. Though this copy is in fair condition with several signs of wear, these signs may in fact increase the significance of the item, demonstrating the frequent use of this item in the hands of a new recruit to the Royal Australian Air Force. Series of pages bound via twine passed through four holes along left side. Front and back cover are card with orange vinyl/fabric strip and paper cover bearing title text. Orange pages throughout mark sections. Book printed throughout.Inscribed on front cover: "449852/AC2 ELIASON R/B/2". Inscribed on interior "449852/ELIASON. Photograph - Original x-rays, X-rays from pioneering Ballarat Demonstrations, 1896
X-Rays were first discovered on 08 November 1895. By 18 July 1896 staff members of the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB), were experimenting with the exciting new discovery. The history of x-rays began on 08 November 1895 at the University of Wurzburg in Bavaria. The discovery was officially announced on 25 December 1895. The first radiographs in Ballarat were taken at the School of Mines in July 1896 according to the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) Annual Report. Frederick J. Martell, the Registrar of SMB arranged for the importation of tubes, while John M. Sutherland, an electrician, conducted most of the experiments giving 6 inch, 12 inch and 16 inch sparks respectively. In a short time brilliantly successful results were obtained, with some SMB Roentgen negatives taken at this time still in existence today. Samuel Ernest Figgis, H. R. W. Murphy, D. McDougall, and Frederick J. Martell carried out experiments at the SMB on Saturday evening 18 July 1896, producing 'perfect' negatives of a hand and wrist. A Roentgen Tube and an induction coil giving a two inch spark, the coil being sparked by the SMB's dynamo, were used to obtain these results. The Courier reported that 'the exposure of five minutes was ample' but concluded that 'the length of the exposure will be shortened as experiments proceed.' The Ballarat Courier reported on 20 July 1896 that: "Thanks to the energy of the staff of The School of Mines, Ballarat, and particularly to Messers F.J. Martell and D. McDougall, the assistance of Rontgen X-rays will soon be available, for the relief of suffering humanity, at this institution." Martell was an ardent amateur photographer, and Duncan McDougall's experience as an electrician has enabled the two gentlemen to carry their experiments on to a perfectly successful issue. At first these gentlemen, together with Professor Purdie and Mr W. Huey Steele, conducted a series of experiments by the aid of a Bonetti glass-plate induction machine which had been constructed by Mr McDougall. The results were very good, the various bones of the hand being distinctly visible. The following people were among those who witnessed the first X-ray experiments to be carried out in Ballarat. Andrew Anderson, President of the School of Mines, a large number of ladies and gentlemen, the medical profession Dr Edward Champion (1867-1929) Dr Gerald Eugene Cussen (1888-1943) Dr William Edward Davies (1868-1928) Dr Charles William Henry hardy (1861-1941) Dr Edward Kenneth Herring(1864-1922) Dr Joseph Lalor (1859-1907) Dr James Thomas Mitchell (1856-1945) Dr Edward Graham Ochiltree (1857-1896) Dr Robert Denham Pinnock (1849-1902) Dr Joseph Francis Usher (c1832-1909) Dr Grace Vale (nk-1933). (http://guerin.ballarat.edu.au/aasp/is/library/collections/art_history/honour-roll/honourroll_X-Ray_pioneers.shtml) "Seven patients of the doctors who were present were treated. In each case the patient was suffering from the effects of an old wound or some other injury to other a hand or foot. One patient, a boy had a finger broken some years earlier and when xray plate of the injury was developed it indicated plainly the fracture on one of the joints of the third finger. In another case a woman had a foot had a foot X-rayed and the photograph revealed the seat of an earlier imjury to it. Likewise an injury to the bones of a hand of an elderly man was revealed by an x-ray photograph. Every X-ray photograph that evening showed the importance of this new development in electrical science and the doctors present agreed the "the results of the experiments on their patients, by showing the exact seat of the injury and its present condittion, would materially assist them iin supporting cures." Photograph - Photograph - Black and White, Ballarat Courier, Dick Richards and his sister, Mrs V.S. Greenhalgh with the Bust of Dick Richards, 06/1983
Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antartica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antartic Exploraton Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Most Antarctic enthusiasts know of Ernest Shackleton's attempt to cross the continent, only to be thwarted by the sinking of the ship 'Endurance'. Dick Richards was the physicist and sled manager for Shackleton's Ross Sea Party - with the task to meet Shackleton on the other side of the continent. When Shackleton planned his transcontinental crossing he decided to use supply depots as loads of supplies were too heavy to pull. The depots would enable Shackleton's party to carry just enough to reach the Pole, relying on the depots which were to be left by the Aurora's crew every 60 miles, stowed in 2 sledge journeys in 1915 and 1916. Dick Richards spent 3 freezing years in Antarctica between 1914 and 1917. Richards' worst experience was when his ship Aurora, tethered offshore, was blown away in a gale leaving Richards marooned for two years with nine other men on the ice floe. The expedition, consisting of two teams, were attempting to cross Antarctica from opposite sides, linking up somewhere near the middle. "That was with pretty poor equipment by today's standards, and we did not make it." (Dick Richards) The Ross Sea Party arrived in McMurdo Sound aboard the Aurora in January 1915. The men planned to make two sledging trips to leave supply depots every 60 nautical miles to Mount Hope about 400 miles away. The going was tough as the sledges were overloaded. Temperatures were as low as minus 68F. In June 1916 the party crossed on foot to Cape Evans, occupied Scott's Hut (from his Terra Nova Expedition, erected in January 1911) in May 1915, for two months. On 10 January 1917 Richards was hunting for seals when he saw a ship on the horizon. It was 'The Aurora'. Picking up the relieved survivors 'The Aurora' arrived in New Zealand on 9 February 1917 to a hero's welcome. Joyce, Wild, Hayward and Richards later won the Albert Medal for their heroic devotion to duty. Later an inlet on the Antartic continent was named after Richards. Dick Richards wrote the following years after the ordeal "To me no undertaking carried through to conclusion is for nothing. And so I don't think of our struggle as futile. It was something the human spirit accomplished." Prime Minister Bob Hawke wrote in 1984 'Your incredible journey of almost 2000 miles across the Antarctic Wastelands - involving some 9 months in the field with makeshift equipment - and you're adherence to duty in the face of enormous difficulty, suffering from scurvy, and the death of comrades, will; be an inspiration to your countrymen of the future as it is to us today." After returning to Australia Dick Richards resumed his work at SMB as Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics, and developed many pieces of experimental equipment. During World War Two he acted as a scientific adviser in the production of optical apparatus in Australia. In 1946 he was appointed Principal and twelve years later he retired after a total of 44 years service. Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. Greenhalgh (widow of the sculptor and sister of the subject). Photograph - Black and White, Ponsonby May Carew Smyth, 1906
Ponsonby Carew Smyth, A.R.C.A. London, was Victorian Art Inspector of Technical Schools. "Ponsonby May Carew-Smyth (1860-1939), educationist, was born on 7 August 1860 at Cork, Ireland, son of Emmanuel Uniacke Smyth, gentleman, and his wife Catherine Giles, née Carew. Carew-Smyth's initial art training and teaching was at the Belfast Government School of Art and Design. In 1885 he entered the National Art Training School at South Kensington, London, where he remained as student and teacher for five years. He also taught at Rugby School, studied at the Royal School of Wood Carving and the Guild School of Handicrafts, London, and was sent by the Department of Science and Art to study art, art education and museum procedures in Paris. Testimonials to his career in England affirm his ability and dedication as an educationist and his integrity as a man. On 23 December 1890 Carew-Smyth married Marie Reynolds of Brixton; they migrated to Australia next January. In September Carew-Smyth applied from Melbourne for the position of master of the school of art and design, established under the auspices of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. Opening in November, the school offered day classes and a broad curriculum, and under Carew-Smyth's guidance, established a sound reputation. In November 1899 he was appointed inspector of drawing in the Department of Education. Carew-Smyth saw drawing as a crucial link between primary and technical education, insisting on it as a 'mental process quite as much as a manual'; he believed strongly in the utilitarian value of drawing to the artisan class and of art as 'craftmanship'. By his emphasis on teacher-training, by his role in the Teachers' Training College, and by his constant travels, writing and lecturing, he upgraded both the standard and importance of drawing early in the century. His meticulous mind formulated the Austral Drawing Books which provided the basis of instruction in the subject in Victoria until 1927. Although he gave his occupation as 'artist', Carew-Smyth was primarily an educationist. He was actively involved in the early years of Prahran and Swinburne Technical colleges, and especially the Working Men's College which held his interest even after his retirement. In 1906 he was appointed chairman of the Victorian State Schools' Equipment and Decoration Society, and he was important in the organization of the state schools' exhibition that year. He designed the commemorative wall plaques installed in state schools after World War I, and the art teachers' certificate. He was prominent in bringing about the 1922 Jubilee Exhibition, and the 1926 showing of work of overseas schools, and especially the 1934 Melbourne centenary 'Early Victorian Art' exhibition. In the 1930s he wrote wide-ranging, informative and sometimes humorous articles for the Argus on various aspects of the decorative arts. In mid-1936 he was acting director of the National Gallery of Victoria. To students his single-mindedness sometimes suggested sternness, but Carew-Smyth was always held in the highest regard both professionally and personally. His colleagues recalled a man of kindness, unstinting devotion to work, and humour; he was considered quite a raconteur. Survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, he died in his home at South Yarra on 9 October 1939, and was cremated." The purpose of the club would be to meet fortnightly or monthly & discuss papers contributed by members on matters of scientific interest; also to discuss general scientific matters brought up by members. Field days covered [illegible] also be held, for those particularly interested in Zoology, Botany or Geology. If the club were strong, the matter of a small journal could be considered. We should be glad if you would interest yourself in the proposed club, & also enlist the interest of any friends who have inclinations in that direction. With this obhect, a meeting will be held at the School of Mines, on Saturday evening, May 15th, at 8 pm., and we hope for your sympathy [illegible] and attendance. The following information was the preface of the 1985 GIAE handbook: The Gippsland institute of Advanced Education was established by an Order-in-Council in September, 1968, but, owes its origin to engineering diploma courses established in 1928 to service the developing electrical industry. The Council of the Institute includes members of the Gippsland community who are prominent in industry, commerce, education and the professions, the Director of the institute, the representative of the academic staff, of general staff, of students and of the Convocation of the Institute. In 1972 the Institute occupied the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surroundings near the township of Churchill, ten kilometres south of Morwell and one hundred and sixty kilometres east of Melbourne. Engineering laboratories are temporarily located in buildings on the site of the Yallourn College of TAFE at Newborough and they will be consolidated on the Churchill campus by the end on 1985. In 1974 new buildings were completed under a self-help program to house the School of Visual Arts. A building complex to provide the first stages of the permanent library and the Union, and accommodation for the School of Business and Social Sciences was completed in 1976. An Education building, an Applied Science building and student residential buildings for 108 student places were completed at the beginning on 1976. The Binishell, a multi-purpose facility was completed in 1980. On its establishment, the Institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses which were previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College. These were diploma in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Business, all of which were recognised by the appropriate professional bodies. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education is the only centre of Higher Education east of Melbourne and offers a range of vocational courses at associate diploma, diploma, degree, graduate degree and master levels to meet the educational needs of the Gippsland regions. The institute also has a very large commitment to a program on external studies. Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat had a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University.4 plaques placed on the wall of 'The Knuckle' at Federation University Gippsland Campus. .1) Brown and brass coloured plaque commemorating the establishment of Yallourn Technical School. .2) Brass plaque commemorating the opening of the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. .3) Brass plaque commemorating the affiliation between Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education and Monash University. .4) Plaque commemorating .1) 28 May 1928 In 1928 the Yallourn Technical College was established at the request of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to provide technical and engineering support to staff. From this College the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was formed in 1968 leading to the establishment of Monash University College Gippsland in 1990 with full integration into Monash University in 1993. .2) The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was officially opened on the 20th November, 1976 by Senator The Honourable J.L. Carrick Minister of State for Education and The Honourable L.H.S. Thompson C.M.G., M.P.
