Work on paper - Printmaking - Screenprint & Engraving, Bryant, Darren, 'Little Boy' by Darren Bryant, 2009
"My current practice explores and questions ideas about social, cultural and historical inherited gender stereotypes. The images used are sourced from toys, games, models and references to childhood from my own collection. One such toy is a model plane of the Enola Gay. This screenprint, sourced from the box, shows an image of young boy happily clutching his toy plane. The surface of the print is embossed with images of the nuclear weapon that was dropped on Hiroshima."Darren BRYANT ( 06/06/1971- ) Born Lismore, New South Wales Darren’s work explores the familiar landscapes of childhood, identity and the everyday. He received a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Printmaking) from the Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, in 1992 and a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Fine Art (Printmaking) from Griffith University, Brisbane, in 1993. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Dolls, antique copy 'Catherine Spence', c1980
... dolls ...Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician and leading suffragette. Her family moved to South Australia in 1839. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Given the epitaph "Grand Old Woman of Australasia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian 5 dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia. She was one of the prime movers, with C. Emily Clark (sister of John Howard Clark), of the "Boarding-out Society". This organization had as its aim the placing of destitute children, who would otherwise be sent to "Industrial School", into approved families. She was an advocate of Thomas Hare's scheme for proportional representation, at one stage considering this issue more pressing than that of woman suffrage. This doll is used as an educational toy to help visitors imagine life c1900An antique copy china doll representing Catherine Spence. Photograph - Jean Brown, 1918
Zillah Jean Brown, known as Jean, was the granddaughter of a pioneer of the district, Mr Hugh Brown. Hugh Brown (1830-1930), born in Ireland, arrived in Adelaide in 1855 and in the Mordialloc district in 1856. Mr Brown brought land in 1866 and built his farmhouse “Pine Vale” in 1870 near the site of the present Mordialloc Secondary College (then part of the property) and extended his property when the swampland was made open for selection in 1871. The property was a market garden and orchard. Hugh Brown married Zillah Baxter (1866) and they had six sons, five living to adulthood. The Brown family increased their land holding until they held a major part of the farmland between Mordialloc Creek to almost the Aspendale Railway Station. The property was a market garden and orchard. Mr Brown took an active interest in the public life of the community, a Justice of the Peace; Councillor of Dandenong Shire for over 30 years, was twice Shire President; and a founding member of the Mordialloc Mechanics Institute.
