Badge - Gripman - 13 - Clifton Hill, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - Clifton Hill car house or depot. Would have allowed free travel when in uniform to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Tramway Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Most likely made by Stokes and Sons - possible imprint covered by the leather part.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Gripman" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top portion of the badge, the letters "C13H. Has a nickel-plated finish with the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a two-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Badge - Trackman - 240 - All Lines, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - a trackman - Track maintainer. Would have allowed free travel when on duty and to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Trackman" and number "240" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top half of the badge "All Lines" with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Has the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a single-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Badge - ATMOEA Vic. Branch (Tramways Union) badge
Given to members of the Australian Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association union wear on their uniforms. The union badge was permitted to be worn on a uniform.Demonstrates a MMTB uniform button.Badge was made on a brass/gold backing with painted enamel on the front. On the central portion of the badge, had the ATMOEA logo, with the words "Vic" with red enamel backing, and on the outer edge of the badge "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" with a royal blue background. The back of the badge is fitted with a spring retaining clip. The plastic bag is most likely what it was delivered in and was handed to Union members. Photograph of some 94 traffic staff in front of the Malvern Depot, possibly near the time of the MMTB absorption of the PMTT. The employees are wearing two different styles of uniforms (63 dark and 31 light) all with caps. Shows the roller doors at the top of the depot and the overhead trolley mechanism that allowed the doors to close and bypass the trolley wire. There are four trams behind the men - each showing a different destination - Windsor, Esplanade, Mont Albert and Burke Road. The three cars on the right appear to be C class cars. Set of three coat buttons: 1 - Small Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust - PMTT - made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - approx. 20mm dia. The badge backing piece is brass. 2 - Large PMTT - heavily worn - made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - approx. 26mm dia - missing lug. 3 - MMTB button or Badge - damaged - made by Buttons of Birmingham UK - approx. 25mm dia. Each button has a backing piece on rear with a lug (except for 2) for sewing onto a jacket and have name of manufacturer stamped on rear part. ... . Trams tramways Uniforms cable trams MTOCo Made from a cast brass ...Lapel Badge for the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. staff. Has an abbreviation of "MTOCo" to indicate the tramway operator and worn as part of their uniform. No manufacturer's name on the rear of the badge, though possibly made by Stokes & Sons Melboune. Three copies held, two fitted with a clip - as shown in the photograph. See Reg Item 1923 for a photo showing how it was used for a Conductor's uniform.Demonstrates a item worn on a MTOCo Uniform. Made from a cast brass item, nickel plated, cast in the form of handwritten or script letters.
