Album - Photo Album, Newstar, 1960s to 1970's
Photographic album containing 39 Colour postcards of Melbourne trams. The album consists of 30 leaves of dark grey heavy paper with three creases on left hand side of sheet, bound into a heavy bluey grey folder, embossed in gold 'Scrap Book" and bound with bluey grey string with two holes. The cover has been embossed with a the blue grey in swirls. Inside of back cover is a white label, "A New Star Product", with a please ask for No. with "425" stamped on. Postcards have been glued into the album. Entries have been kept to a single line - cards are able to be dated from buildings, whether the trams have marker lights, types of motor cars and general Melbourne history. Black and white print of a donated negative. Print made 8/1998. Photo of Victorian Railway tram No.34 at the Brighton Beach terminus. Tram has the destination of "St Kilda Rly Stn". In the overhead can be seen the pan for assisting the driver to put the rear pole onto the wire. Also in the background of the photo is a stone wall of the railway tunnel under the road that served the Brighton Beach Pier. Photo taken 7-4-1950. A photo album, spiral bound with 10 cardboard sheets with photos of late Alf Twentyman cable car set on covers. Each sheet coated with a glue and overlain by a plastic sheet. Album contains 34 photos of BTM W3 661operating in Melbourne 1989 on a charter for Yapper Tours. - no date on photos. Photos taken at Preston depot, South Melbourne loop, Camberwell depot, Thornbury depot, Preston Workshop gates, Sth Melb. depot, Victoria Parade, St Kilda, Brunswick depot, Victoria Market and Kew depot. Date of Tour 31/10/1965. 1422.1 - X2 at the terminus of route 69/79 routes at the Esplanade, St Kilda. Note the track is alongside the north side kerb. Has Palais Theatre in the background and Luna Park. Tram showing destination of "Municipal Center" 1422.2 - Hawthorn Road, just north of Balaclava road, looking south. Scrap Book - with printed cardboard covers - titled scrap book on outside and reproductions of newspaper clippings printed onto covers, 64 pages off white paper. Scrap book compiled by Neville Gower from Nov. 1992 to June 1997. Primarily consists of newspaper clippings glued to the pages involving the Ballarat Tramway Museum. Also contained are other items of relevant interest, such as BTM brochures. Pages number in pencil by Warren Doubleday 2/2001. Where relevant some items contained in this book have been separately catalogued to enable easier reference. Some items were already in the collection and are thereby reference with their registered number. Also contains registered items 1659, 1654 and 1655. Newspaper clippings contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 11 and 12. Cutting on page 11 titled "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", written "By a Former Traveller", with date of 26-10-1940 in blue pence. Notes that the person was glad not to know of the last run of the Melbourne cable trams, the previous Saturday. Laments their passing, rides, crews, St. Kilda Road, the tramcars and the services provided. At the base of the cutting has a photograph of cable trailer No. 1 being off loaded in Lonsdale St. to go into the Museum. Cutting on page 12, titled "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History" written by Hugh Murphy. Appears to have been written prior to their withdrawal in Melbourne but noting their closure at the end of the year. Notes the construction, the costs, Mr. F.B. Clapp, G. S. Duncan, operations, the various routes, the services and the gradual deterioration of the track. Has the Melbourne Punch cartoon of 10/12/1885, titled "Bail Up". Cuttings have been cut out from a sheet and pasted into the book.
