This book belonged to Mary Norman- Bail (1883-1962). She came to Warrnambool in 1901 and studied art and became an art teacher and artist. She moved to Echuca and then Ararat where she set up a school called The Pathfinder. She became well known as an artist and exhibited her work in the Victorian Artists Exhibitions. In 1922 she married Jesse Bail and had one child named Jessica . Several of her paintings are in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection.This book is of considerable interest because of its connection to a Warrnambool artist.This a soft covered book of 88 pages. It has a blue cover with black printing and an image of a weaving loom. It contains printed material and many illustrations and diagrams. Mary-Lou began exhibiting in the mid 1980s and over the years has been involved in producing unique pieces as well as developing a large range of domestic ware. In 1984, six months after graduating from a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Phillip Institute of Technology, Mary-Lou was invited to present a solo exhibition at Devise Gallery in South Melbourne. This objective, she says, compelled her to find a studio and was an incentive to focus on developing her ceramic practice independently.Mary-Lou Pittard holds close ties to the Shire of Nillumbik - living and working within Eltham. Her Eltham North Mudbrick Studio employed 5 assistants until recently when Mary-Lou and partner Chris Pittard have scaled down operations. They now produce everything themselves and find that this enables them to focus on producing unique, sculptural ceramic works. Mary-Lou is currently exploring the fine qualities of porcelain and combining these with her ongoing passion for decorative colour and form. 'Decorative Bowl' is a wheel-thrown/moulded bowl, oblong in shape and has been manipulated by hand. Narrow sections have been incised from the main body, perhaps a practical design feature for air circulation, and the rim has been altered to form a jagged edge. Bold colourful shapes decorate the interior of the bowl. Two photos of widows with a handcrafts stall at Flinders Street Station in 1990. Widows met regularly at Legacy House for craft gatherings lessons. Some of the items the Widows produced were entered into an annual craft contest and exhibition. Many items were also donated to the annual Badge Week stall that widows organised. The stall was often outside Legacy House but in these photos from 1990 the stall was set up at Flinders Street Station. Widows are conducting a sale of craft items in a shopping arcade. It is possible the items sold were those made for the annual Art and Craft Exhibitions. Widows would hold a stall in Badge Week, often outside Legacy House to sell items. The Legacy signs say "Legacy caring for Australia's biggest family". The trading tables are outside a Boyles Sweets shop and a Franklins No Frills supermarket. Boyles Sweets closed down by July 1993 so it was before then. The gallery was founded in 1967 as a one-room gallery within Horsham’s library building. In 1983, after the offer of a major bequest from Mr Mack Jost AM, it moved to the former council offices which is the building it resides in today. The 1939 Art Deco building provides elegant and human-scale spaces for the display of the collection and temporary exhibitions. In 1977 Celia Rosser was awarded the Linnaean Society of London's Jill Smythies Award for botanical illustration, and in 1995 was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. Monash University awarded her an honorary Master of Science degree in 1981, and an honorary PhD in 1999. Banksia Rosserae is the last banksia species discovered and was named after the artist. Rennie Ellis was an Australian documentary photographer and a key figure in Australian visual culture. Grand Final breakfast 1982 depicts a cluttered table during a football Grand Final day breakfast. The messily covered tablecloth, as well as the appearance of alcohol at a morning event, displays the signature larrikin attitude and passion with which football events are undertaken in Australia. This work was shown in the 2017 Counihan Gallery exhibition Leather Poisoning, along with many other works by Ellis, capturing the nation’s love of the game. Wooden Catholic Church Reefs built about 1865. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. This wooden building was built about 1865 on a site held by minors right, near the present Stawell Courthouse. It was situated on a track later to become Patrick St. The present St Patricks church is built of granite, quarried in the nearby Black Range with facings of Grampians Freestone and was opened in 1873. This first Presbyterian church was built in Church Street and was of a modest design as it was to be only a temporary house of worship. Grampians Hall’s Gap (Chautauqua Peak). Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. It is recorded in the history of the Presbyterian Church of Stawell, that one fine piece of organisation by Rev. E.C. Tennant in the early 1890’s was a Chautauqua, or religious conference at the Grampians. Many of the religious leaders of Victoria gathered for the purpose of discussion, conference and spiritual enrichment. So great was the impression made, that a peak in the Grampians was named Chautauqua Peak. stawell

Lily and William Wishart lived during this period in 'Noranook', Fernhurst grove, Kew. There are numerous contemporary accounts of the social and civic activities of Lily Wishart as mayoress of Kew. In a description of a 'Mayoral At Home' in the Kew Recreation Hall, a report in The Australasian (10 Aug 1907, p.46) described the event thus: MAYORAL AT HOME In the Kew Recreation-hall on Thursday evening the Mayor and Mrs. W. Wishart gave an at home to between two and three hundred guests. ... Prior to the musical programme, the mayor and mayoress held a reception, standing on a dais at one side of the room. Mrs. Wishart was gowned in black glace silk, trimmed with handsome lace applique, and she wore a cream Maltese lace scarf over her shoulders, and held a bouquet of cardinal carnations.' This may be the dress in the collection. Another interesting and relevant report is an account in The Argus (19 March 1907, p.6): 'WOMEN'S WORK EXHIBITION The mayoress of Kew (Mrs. W. Wishart) invited the ladies of the district to meet in the mayor's room, town-hall, Kew, at half past 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, to consider steps to be taken locally in support of the proposed Exhibition of Women's Work.'The dress is locally significant as the work of a skilled home-dressmaker in Kew, who was also a leading civic figure in the municipality. One tends to think of amateur dressmakers as women who could not afford to purchase clothes from a retailer. Clearly, 'women's work' and the skills that educated and wealthy women acquired in the period allowed them to fashion their own garments.Full length evening dress in four parts. Undergarments include two items: a basic black silk petticoat and an upper black silk slip, the latter with two bands of ruffles. The lace dress is in two parts: a bodice and a skirt. The black, high-necked bodice is constructed of silk organza to which guipure lace has been extensively applied. The bodice has long puffed sleeves, gathered on the forearm to form a wide band of lace and ribbon at the wrist. The skirt is constructed of the same black fabric with descending bands of gathered black silk ribbon, used as ornamentation. The skirt also features a long train. Apart from the donor information about its provenance, the style of the dress can confidently be dated to the period 1900-1910. The dress was made and worn to civic functions by Mrs Lily Wishart, Mayoress of Kew in 1906-7. Earlier items belonging to William and Lily Wishart entered the collection as early as 2002. The dress was donated by a descendant of a friend of Lily Wishart in 2020. The photograph of the dress and its components attached to the record needed to be digitally enhanced so that details of the dress could be viewed online, as the fabric of the dress is an intense black.
