Award, Kew Heights Sports Club : State Champions of Victoria 2nd Division, 2008-9
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Elaborate trophy, awarded to Kew Heights Bowling Club in 2009. Parks Victoria - Mount Buffalo Chalet
Crockery
The jug and cup were purchased from a second - hand shop in Bairnsdale. Jug is older than cup as the chalet is represented as a single storey structure. The cup is later as the second storey appears in the illustration. 'Souvenirs in relation to the Chalet and Mount Buffalo wee first mention in December 1912... A large range of souvenirs has since been associated with the Chalet and Mount Buffalo from crafted wooden items, silver spoons, cups etc... The collection includes a broad selection of products that have been sold throughout much of the Chalet's history, each representative of the transient fashions of their period.' (Pg. 114. Historica) 'A group of tableware items is notable for its black transfer printed decoration, which features the Chalet building. Interestingly, the printed designs represent the Chalet at two different stages in its building history under the Victorian Railways, in 1926 after completion of the north wing, and 1937-39, after the second storey is added to the front.. manufactured in England by A.B. Jones and sons, a Stoke on Trent pottery firm which operated under the trade name of Grafton China between 1900-1972.' (Pg. 114. Historica)Listed in Draft Inventory of Significant Collection Items . Booklet, The First Brochure on the First Premiated Design. The National War Memorial of Victoria, 1928
A booklet produced by Hudson and Wardrop, Architects, who had won the contest for the design of the Shrine. This booklet shows their models of the Shrine in photos and diagrams of the site. It goes into detail of the plans for Rock of Remembrance, the eye of light, the porticos, the tympanums, the inner Shine, and materials it will use, etc. It says: 'The theme is Remembrance, and the doing is indicative of Remembrance. It is Australian in feeling, in that is stands for the highest of Australian ideals - ideals we fought for - Patriotism, Sacrifice, Justice and Freedom.' Messrs Hudson and Wardrop were also returned servicemen. This booklet could have been used to inform the public of the plans whilst fundraising for the building project. In 1928 the Governor asked for the public to contribute approx £100,000 towards the project, while the State Government had already guaranteed £80,000. (Actual budget ended up being £250,000). Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. Colac was the first club to select a president that had done his war service in Vietnam. Brian started his National Service aged 20, at Puckapunyal and trained as an artillery signaller. For 9 months he was a member of a forward observation party which had the responsibility of calling artillery fire to support the operations of the infantry battalion with which it was working. Returning to Australia after a year. 'What he had seen and done in Vietnam, the tough times he had endured and the lighter times he had enjoyed with his mates, had made him conscious of the debt he owed to the families of those who not returned. Ledger, Ledger and Correspondence (Swinton), 1930s
.1 This is a ledger which was originally printed for the recording of agricultural and pastoral sales but has been used by the Warrnambool firm of Swintons Pty Ltd. to record sales of farm products and machinery from 1934 to 1945. .2 These are 13 items of correspondence, receipts, insurance documents, agreements etc. associated with the Warrnambool business firm of Swintons Pty Ltd. These were contained within the ledger referred to above. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter for a decade, erecting many buildings in the Warrnambool area, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, glassware and china. In 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling produce, hardware and seeds. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger and the accompanying paper material are of considerable importance as they are associated with the Swinton businesses in Warrnambool. The ledger contains lists of customers of the Swinton business in the 1930s and 40s and provides names, addresses and the cost of the product sold. This is very useful to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, is among the oldest family businesses in Australia..1 This is a hard cover ledger. It is beige-coloured with red leather edging on the corners and a red and gold label on the front cover. The pages are held in the folder with metal studs. The pages are white with red and blue printed lines and red leather tabs numbering 1 to 9. The entries are handwritten in blue and black ink. The ledger cover is slightly scuffed. .2 These are 13 items of correspondence from the 1930s and 40s. There is both handwritten and printed material. ‘The Perpetual Income Tax Recorder. No 5. Tool - Wrench, Late 19th Century
Johann Elias Bleckmann (1784-1856) founded a steel goods shop in Ronsdorf near Dusseldorf Germany. After completing a business education in his father's business, his son Johann Heinrich August Bleckmann (1826-1891) gained further experience through travel in North and South America. When his father died, he took over the steel goods store and moved it to Solingen. He bought a hammer mill in Mürzzuschlag Styria (Austria) in 1862 and converted it into a modern crucible casting steel smelter. His "Phoenix Steel", which he produced himself, achieved worldwide renown. He then went on to establish a file and tool factory and later founded a steel and plate rolling mill. Apart from cutlery blades, the company's self-produced steel was also processed into tools, scythes, rifle parts, etc. His sons Eugen and Walter continued after his death in 1891 at the Phoenix steelworks. However, by the end of the First World War, the two brothers fell into economic difficulties as a result of eliminating a large part of their foreign trade. In 1921, the company was converted into a public limited company and merged three years later with the company Schoeller & Stahlwerke. Made by Bleckmanns a significant Austrian manufacture of cutlery and tools in a recognized area of Germany famous for the production of steel items. The item is giving a snapshot of early colonial and European trades persons tools and gives an interesting insight into the development and progression of European tool and steel development and innervation prior to the First World War.Drop hand forged steel wrench with unusual locking mechanism to size jaw opening made by J E Bleckmann, Solingen Germany.Machine stamped on handle of wrench LOTUS L R GEBRAUCHS under has MUNSTER, J E BLECKMANN, SOLINGEN Germany. Tool - Smoothing Plane, Johann Heinrich August Bleckmann, 1870 to 1920
Johann Elias Bleckmann (1784-1856) founded a steel goods shop in Ronsdorf near Düsseldorf Germany. Made by Johann Heinrich August Bleckmann a significant Austrian manufacture of cutlery and tools in a recognized area of Germany famous for the production of steel items. The item is giving a snapshot of early colonial and European trades persons tools and gives an interesting insight into the development and progression of European tool and steel development and innervation prior to and just after the First World War.Plane Smoothing type with flat base. Slide - Dunn's Rock Eppalock, 2012
The low rolling hills of the Kimbolton countryside consist of ancient, hard and fractured Ordovician rock up to 65 million years old, which was originally deposited deep under the sea. Rocks mainly are sandstone, mudstone, black shale and quartz conglomerates. Marine fossils can be found in the area. Around seven million years ago a basalt flow buried the original bedrock along the along the Campaspe River. Ongoing weathering, wind and water movement over the following years has produced younger clay, sand, silt and gravel deposits throughout the area. Patches of White Hills Gravel are also found in the area. Another unique geological feature of this area is the Permian Glacial Pavement rocks north and south of Eppalock and glacial sediments (such as “Dunn’s Rock” and “Kellams Rock”). During the ice age (up to 280 million years ago) large glaciers moving over the countryside, scoured out sediments, pulverized bedrock, polished and cut grooves into bedrock in the direction of ice movement. When the ice melted boulders etc where left behind in areas of entirely different rock types, such as a 100 Tonne granite block known as ‘The Stranger’ near Derrinal.
