Butter Churn
The churn was used by Elise Weston (nee Trahair) at Barwidgee Creek and Myrtleford in the immediate post-war period. Prior to this time it was in the possession of the Trahair family on their family farm where a small dairy herd met family requirements.The churn represents an aspect of self sufficient living in rural areas outside township boundaries. It assisted households to meet family needs using simple processing technology and more so when surplus butter could be sold on in local markets.An upright clear-glass butter churn with screw-on metal cap, handle and gears. This plug tobacco cutter was collected locally and displayed as part of the memorabilia display at the Tobacco Company of Victoria Ltd., Myrtleford. Plug tobacco could be acquired on tobacco farms or purchased at local outlets.Tobacco cutters were significant tools for pipe smokers until self-made or manufactured cigarettes began to dominate the tobacco sales market from the 1920s. Such cutters are a link to a previously common means of consuming tobacco.A small cast iron and wooden guillotine-style tobacco cutter. Herring Cart (haringkarretje)
Souvenir, home made with jigsaw, celebrating Dutch national delicacy. These carts are seen in streets and markets throughout the Netherlands during herring season.Balsa wood model of a herring cart with 2 spoked wheels. Main body has two compartments covered with circular lids, surmounted by rack holding 3 herring barrels in the Dutch national colours of red ,white and blue. At top of rack a fish-shaped advertising salt and sour herrings. Main body also has a support at both ends and a handle for pushing the cart. At other end is preparation area with a hole for discarding fish waste into the bucket which is hanging below. A checked tea towel hangs off the preparation area. Next to the cart is white pot with a lid possibly for holding chopped onions. -

Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. Within the side walkway of gravel and composite stone is an etched of local activities relating to the Chinese community achievements that can be added to by the community.Open Monument is of aesthetic and historical significance to the people of BallaratArchitectural artwork consisting of large marble panels on a corten steel frame imbedded into a grassed mount.Inscription on plaque: Open Monument 無極紀念碑 / Artist: John Young / Officially Launched by Mr Yumin Song / Chinese Consul-General to Victoria / 6th September 2015 / Open Monument unearths stories of the Chinese diaspora in Ballarat, a name which means/ “resting place” to the traditional custodians - the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung people./ The monument comprises of two artworks: Transculture, a granite-panelled work, evoking stories of alternative worldviews, / modernity, leisure and toil. Whilst Timeline traces the major contributions of the Chinese community in Ballarat, every decade / from the 1850s until the present.
