Administrative record, East Ringwood Progress Association Minute Book 1925-1930 and 1946-1948
Hand-written minutes of the East Ringwood Progress Association from 16 November 1925 until 16 June 1930, then continued from 20 May 1946 until 29 November 1948. An additional scan repeats pages 1-3, due to misalignment, and adds names and addresses, for insertion after page 86. Some of 1925-1930 members had surnames Howship, Kelley, Klix, Wedge, Skerritt, Walmsley, Saywell, Watson, Herbert, Neal, Vogel, Hodgkins, etc. Includes records of the formation of the East Ringwood Football Club, and many other local matters. Names for the 1946-48 period were Maggs, Meyland, Rawson, Wedge, Codd, Burke, Hall, Purser, Gowland, Guest, etc. Meetings took place at the Klix's residence then the East Ringwood Pavilion at the Reserve -

Bendigo Advertiser December 23, 1970 - Museum For Bendigo Proposal. Bendigo Museum Society plans to establish a museum of applied science and natural history in Bendigo, and hopes the City Council will provide a building for such a museum. President Dr. W. Straede and Secretary Mr. E. Wilkinson explain their plan to council. Mr Wilkinson, a geologist with the Mines Department , who formerly worked at the National Museum in Melbourne believes Bendigo would readily support such a museum providing a building was supplied by council for the venture to go ahead. Cr A.E. Galvin asked if the Bendigo Museum Society had any particular building in mind and an expression of interest in the Temperance Hall was raised. Cr. J.C.M. Painting - BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES EAGLEHAWK
Watercolour and black pen painting of the Bank of New South Wales, Eaglehawk. Written on bottom of art:' Note room with high chimney where gold was melted into ingots to be sent to Melbourne. This bank was closed about 1920 and has been used as a shop since' Artwork signed by Alf Perry 1954. Two punch holes on LH side. Written on back in pencil : Only 3 banks in Victoria had a smelting room with tall chimney. The gold was bought and refined and melted into ingots. The three banks were at Eaglehawk, Castlemaine and Bendigo (from publicity officer Bank of NSW Melbourne). I have established that the Castlemaine Bank NSW definitely did not have a chimney stack as in this picture. Wooden framed 'Board of Examiners for Engine-Drivers' Third Class Certificate of Competency as Engine-Driver (pursuant to the FACTORIES AND SHOPS ACTS )awarded to Julius Cohn - entitling him to drive any engine used in or in connection with a factory or work room , the cylinder of which does not exceed six inches in diameter , or if a double cylinder engine is used , the combined area must not exceed that of a cylinder six inches in diameter . Photographed in 1872 by William PATERSON as one of a series for the Melbourne Exhibition of 1873; original mount hanging in Engineering Department at Port Melbourne Town Hall at 19-9-1994 but now in Port Phillip,City Collection. This set of original prints belonged to Town Clerk Syd ANDERSON, then to his daughter-in-law Phyllis ANDERSON (donor). Accompanied by list of captions, both hand written and typed (the latter a partial listing).View of Beach and piers from Sugar Works, c1871, showing Railway and Town Piers and two jetties in between (caption refers to Donaldson's Jetty), Pier Hotel, gates and some of the yard of the Victorian Sugar Works, and site where Morley's Coal Depot will soon be built, its timber stable and workshop occupied at the time by Carl SEISMAN, mail contractor and owner of the Royal Mail Hotel next door (unseen). The first curved roofed shed can be seen at Town Pier; this remained until demolition in the 1950s. The Post Office Boat House is also visible just before the first small jetty (which is at the place where Alfred LINGHAM's Marine Hotel - the first in the area, 1840 - had its jetty). Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Business: City Cash Store, circa 1875. John McClelland was first registered as a brewer at Kangaroo Flat in 1861. In 1862, McClelland moved to the Australasian Store in Bridge Street, Sandhurst. He then established a business and opened a branch store in Pall Mall, between Bull and Mundy streets. He was advertising for assistant grocers for his Mitchell Street branch in January, 1874. On January 30, he offered the Pall Mall store for auction and invested money into the City Cash Store at No. 5 Bath Corner, next to Browne & Heale chemists. This shop had closed by September 1877. By 1880 McClelland was listed only at Bridge Street where he traded until 1885. John McClelland died in March, 1897.newspaper, bendigo advertiser, the way we were -

Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings. Document - LONG GULLY HISTORY GROUP COLLECTION: RICHARD HARTLEY SMITH ABBOTT
Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. Watercolour painting by Charlie Hammond showing two train carriages at Belgrave Station. A group of people stand on the small platform beside the small station building which bears the sign 'Monbulk'. In the background are hilly paddocks. The most distant paddock has rows of what appear to be fruit trees. Below the painting Hammond has written '1901 Belgrave Station when it was Monbulk. Benson's Hill in the background. Later – Biffin's and later still – Harper's Guest House. Typical of all the stations along the line. Govt. had not recovered from the land boom and could not afford to build better ones.' This painting is based on a photo taken by Hammond in 1906, which is labelled by him, 'Sunday 28th Jany 1906. bringing the injured passengers to Belgrave Ry Station after the accident at the trestle bridge.' -

Has a strong association with the people who were involved in the early formation of the BTPS and the 1972 Annual General Meeting.Newspaper clipping from The Courier of Ballarat of Monday 25/9/1972 with two photos. Article quotes BTPS President saying support for the BTPS was still small. This followed the Annual General Meeting of the Society the previous Saturday. Written by Campbell Duncan for the BTPS c1978, giving details of the history of Ballarat's tramways, and a brief history of Geelong and Bendigo, the formation and operations of the BTPS and the tramcar fleet. Has 10 photographs, 1 sketch of the front of a maximum traction tramcar and a map of the BTPS location on the rear. Map drawn by G. Inglis 2.73. Note no credits for photographs. Functional Object - Trolley Wire Sample, BTM - Wendouree Parade
Piece of heavily worn trolley wire taken from south bound ear, just before ear 41B. Wire in area (on the joiner side) had failed about two months prior to replacement. Sample taken 8 December 1997 during replacement operations. Was on a curve. Two screw marks at one end from being inside a wire joiner. Heavily worn over the years with groove only one side of wire. Top of wire green (oxidised) and dark grey on underside where not contacted by wheel. Has been cut at both ends. Wire curved after taking down naturally. Item reports on the request by the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society (BTPS) to approve in principle, the operation of a working tramway museum in the Gardens Reserve and the use of Wendouree Parade. Notes which tramcars had been allocated to the BTPS by the SEC. Report from the tourism committee, Cr. J. A. Chisholm. Ephemera - Ticket/s, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), SEC 5d, 1940's?
Block of tickets each - red ink on 60 gsm buff paper, denomination 5d (printed in blue), numbered F029003 - F029049 (six missing) headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Provincial Tramways. Originally a block of 50 tickets been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a small cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. The ticket number is in black ink while the "E" prefix is in red, the ticket number is in black. Ticket used as a Transfer, had day of issue to be punched on the left hand side and the validated destination in number on the right hand side. Tickets 012 to 017 have been removed from block. Has a strong association with Donald Campbell's attempts on land speed records - shows how the vehicle Bluebird was transported and the people who came to see it.Black and White copy photograph of a newspaper photograph taken by The Courier - 19/3/1963, published 20/3/1963 No. 14 near Donald Campbell's "Bluebird", Sturt St (copied from newsprint). Bluebird was one the motor vehicle used in the land world speed record attempts of the era. Show many people milling around the truck carrying the trailer, barricades. No horse tram lines visible. Photo assumed to be pre 1887. Written on the front "Best Wishes from Dorrie ?" and date "8/4/06". Printed along the lower edge "Published by Victoria Stamp Market, Melbourne" and "Printed in Germany". On rear is places for stamp, address only. Yields information about the closure of the SEC operated Ballarat system - presented in an unorganised manner and without newspaper dates.Set of about 5 newspaper clippings glued to a sheet of lined paper. Main cutting titled "Nine trams may be kept in Ballarat", from The Courier Ballarat, 18/8/1971 (can read date through the back paper), about the number of trams to be kept in Ballarat, the BTPS, removal of the overhead. Other cuttings note the provision of bus stops in Ballarat, a hail storm the previous day (Friday 17/8/2005), floods, the derailment of a tram while on a tour for the Ballarat North Technical School, employment of those employees who had been retrenched and two letters re the replacement of the trams, including the aims of the BTPS to operate in Wendouree Parade. Has a strong association with Elvie Phillips - at the time of the closure of the SEC system in Ballarat.Set of four colour prints - were contain within a folder (see below) of Elvie Phillips and crews at the time of the closure of the Ballarat SEC system - September 1971. .1 - standing on the step of a bogie tram with crew member number 58 behind. .2 - City loop with two crew members on either side - and three bogie trams .3 - standing in front of a single trucker, City Loop - with the Union Hotel behind. .4 - sitting on the bumper of a single trucker, Wendouree Parade, Gardens area with a crew member alongside. Printed on Kodak paper. Note - these type of photographs were common at the end of the SEC system - many people had these taken. Always in the way of the tram enthusiasts! Yields information about the last day of the Ballarat Tram Depot operations with the payout and the closure of the gate.Newspaper Clipping from the Courier, Saturday 9 Oct 1971 - titled "End of an Era", of the last day of the tramway depot in Wendouree Parade. Photo features Stan Lakey, foreman at the tramways depot for 23 years, closing the gate at the tramway depot. The men (workers) had been paid off the previous day by Mr. W. Trusler, supervisor. Has 8 other workers in the photo. Appears that the men are holding their payslips or other documents. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 2, No. 2, Aug 1937 titled "The Commission visits Ballarat". The single page item details the visit of the SEC Commissioners to Ballarat 16/7/1936. Gives a list of the people from the SEC who visited. Met with Council, explained the purpose of the SEC - "not for profit". Visited the operations of the SEC in Ballarat, tramway works under the supervision of R. H. Meakin and a visit to Electra Hall. Features a photo of a line up of 21 motor vehicles outside the Ballarat Power House. Record revised 3/4/2019 to add digital images with those from Andrew Cook CD. Various PartiesReference, Research, InformationKHS OrderSubject file relating to the Australian artist A M E Bale who lived at 83 Walpole Street, Kew (Vic). The file contains a great deal of photocopied biographical information, as well as some newspaper articles/clippings. In 1981, the Kew Historical Society applied for the house to be registered by the Historic Buildings Preservation Council of Victoria. Accompanying the application was a citation by Timothy Hubbard (1981). A reply by the Boyce Pizzey, from the Council (1 May 1981) indicated that the building was of “insufficient architectural or historic importance” to warrant registration. The letter also indicated that the current owners had been requested to provide “a professional photographic record of the house and contents and submit these, along with all specifications and drawings, to the Latrobe Library, Melbourne”. Plan - Subdivision Plan, Erin Heights Estate, East kew, 1917
Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The Erin Heights Estate in Kew included just seven lots in in Valerie Street. These were all that remained of this wartime subdivision, the other 11 allotments on Balfour and Belford Roads having already been sold. Balfour Road was to be only a temporary name as the street is currently called Windella Avenue. Now, the parkland opposite the subdivision is the reserve created from the route of the Outer Circle Railway. This Railway reached Kew East in 1925, but had been planned as far back as 1873. The development focuses on the benefits of living in Kew: being at the highest of Kew’s ‘suburbs’; being a good residential area; its rapid growth; and the proximity of the Kew East tram in High Street. Memorial Plaque [ Dead Man's Penny], Henry Tippett WW1 Service number 4928
Memorial Plaque given to the family of Henry Tippett, killed in Action in France 26 July 1916. Henry enlisted when he was 28 years old on the 6 September 1915 in Melbourne. He was born in Carlton and was living at 529 Canning St. Carlton when he enlisted. A small man at 5'.5'' weighing 9 stone. He was allotted to the 15th Refits of the 7th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on the 18 June 1916 on the Kinfaune Castle and landed at Alexandria, On the 29 June 1916.he was transported to Marseilles and one moth later was reported Missing in Action on the 28 July 1916, A court of enquiry concluded he was Killed in Action on the 19 July 1916. He had been in France just 20 daysInscribed with the name Henry Tippett. The plaque was presented on the 4 October 1922. His father William could not attend in person and a Donald Tippett was authorised to pick up the plaque by his mother Eliza Tippett. The plaque number is 319981.His mother Eliza Tippett was granted a pension of one pound per fortnight from the 8th November 1916 -

Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.This image is reproduced from a set of coloured slides. Peard & Sons Plumbing on the corner of Lawrence and High, Roy Benson's store and Woolworths Food-Fair. Peards were located here in the 1940s. By November 1966 to C. 1973 this building was occupied by Tower Tyre Service, followed by Repco Auto Parts until 1985. It is now Lee Corner Chinese restaurant. Roy Benson was listed as a Grocer in the telephone directory, but he apparently had a few tables and chairs and was also a milk bar/café. He was heavily involved in the community including committee roles in Wodonga Dramatic Club, Wodonga & District Progress Association, Wodonga Carpet Bowls Association, Wodonga Chamber of Commerce and Wodonga Shire Council. Translated copy, dated 25 and 28 January 77. Translation refers to the acknowledgement of the receipt of £13.10/- sick pay from the Bendigo German Club and Court of Foresters. Enclosed Doctor's certificate for Mr. Moeckelmann. Because Detlef Moeckelmann was blind, and his sense of hearing was getting gradually weaker, and his old mother had continuous illness, and it was hoped that the German Club and Court King of the Forest could do a little extra for him. The German Club were not in favor of granting extra assistance for an indefinite period. The German Club voted the money, which was dispatched by the next mail. Mr. Detlef Moeckelmann lost his eyesight through an explosion of gunpowder. Two Fare tokens - 1 1/2d - 21mm diameter - light brown celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference.
