The Gipps Street Wesleyan Methodist Church of 1874 and the adjoining school hall, were built in the Collingwood Flat area - one of the municipality's poorest areas. In 1903, the Collingwood Methodist Mission was established with its headquarters in the Gipps Street Church. Six Methodist Missions were created in inner Melbourne. Three churches were operated by the Collingwood Mission. They were: Sackville Street Collingwood, Elizabeth Street, North Richmond (demolished), and Gipps Street Collingwood (demolished). The Mission operated until approximately 1930. The Wesleyan Church and School in Sackville St. Collingwood was built in 1886 and used as a church for 65 years. It was also part of the Collingwood Methodist Mission before being converted to an industrial/commercial complex. The church was auctioned on 3 March 1984.The cutting gives information about the history of the Church at 25 Sackville St. Collingwood prior to its auction sale on 3 March 1984gipps st. methodist church, les gorrie, collingwood mission, sackville street church, wesleyan -

Book, Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1906
This Hymn Book was given to Margaret (Peggie) Peacock by the Christ Church Choir, Warrnambool when she left Warrnambool in 1912. She was the sister of Archdeacon Andrew Peacock, the fourth Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool. Their brother was Sir Alexander Peacock, at one time Premier of Victoria. Margaret Peacock kept house for her brother and assisted him in his pastoral work. Her brother died in Warrnambool in 1912 and Margaret left the town. She died in 1947.This book is of considerable importance as it belonged to a Warrnambool resident in the early 1900s. She worked as a housekeeper for her brother, Archdeacon Peacock and assisted him in his pastoral duties in the Anglican Church. The sketch in the book shows that Margaret Peacock was interested in art work and the caption, ‘Where Memory Lingers’ shows that she had fond memories of her time in Warrnambool. The book was in the possession of her sister, Mrs Uglow, the wife of a Colac physician and this lady was a friend of Gladys Angus, the wife of a well-known Warrnambool doctor, Roy Angus. Mrs Uglow gave the book to Mrs Angus’ daughter, Berry McDade and she has handed it over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for safe-keeping. This is a maroon-coloured leather-bound book of 514 pages of hymns (music and words) and 31 pages of additional material at the end of the book. The inside of the cover has an ornamental gilt pattern on the edges and the page ends have red gilt shading. There are four loose pages, three of them relating to the ownership and donation of the book and one is a prayer for members of the Girls’ Friendly Society. The front cover has been personalised with gold lettering with the initials of the owner and there is an inscription inside relating to the original presentation of the book to the owner, Margaret Peacock. This is in silver and black script. There is also a sketch of Christ Church, Warrnambool by Margaret (Peggie) Peacock inserted into the third page. There is some small damage to the first page.Front Cover: ‘Hymns Ancient and Modern, M.P., HIS’ Inscription: ‘To Miss Peacock, A parting gift from the Choir, Christ Church Warrnambool, October 1912’ Sketch: ‘Where Memory Lingers’ christ church warrnambool, archdeacon peacock, margaret peacock, warrnambool -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Photograph - Photograph, Black and white, Allan Charles Quinn, 5 June 1949
This photograph was taken on the 5th of June, 1946, and shows the ruins of the St intent church built between 1490 and 1556 in a Gothic style and was known for its vast dimensions. The church also had the uniqueness of owning a bell tower that had not been completed. The building was heavily damaged by a bomb fell in the choir level May 31, 1944 during the Allied strikes announcing the landing. The ruins are still standing today. Allan has also written letters home from this period, describing France as a "mess" at this time. This photograph was exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.This is a photograph from the Allan Charles Quinn collection which is a collection of letters and photograph depicting aspects of life at sea for a young man in the era immediately following World War II.Black and white photograph of the ruins of a gothic church bombed during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. It shows the arch of the church left standing in the foreground, with a tower in the background. There is a narrow white boarder about the image. On reverse: ROUEN 5-6-49 handwritten in blue ink. Book - Religious Book, The Book of Common Prayer, Circa 1944
The book was previously part of the service at St Nicholas Seamen's Church in Williamstown, Melbourne. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen was an Anglican charity that served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the organisation began in Williamstown in 1857 as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’ in an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This book is significant historically for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The book is historically significant for its connection to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, an organisation of women, formed to support seafarers. The connection of this book to the Mission to Seamen and to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. This Book of Common Prayer was part of the original furnishings of St Nicholas Seamen's Church, Williamstown, Victoria. The church was operated by the Missions to Seamen organisation. It is one of a set of similar books. The hardcover is of red fabric over cardboard, with gold embossed letters on the spine. This book is part of the St Nicholas Seamen's Church Collection. On the front cover Symbol [CROSS]flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime museum, maritime village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, religion, religious service, st nicholas seamen’s church, williamstown, missions to seamen victoria, the book of common prayer, prayer book -
