A rare hand written diary in chronological order from 31/05/1917 to 21/05/1919 by Stoker Richard Arthur Stephen Collins, DOB 1/12/1899 at Beeac Victoria, later residing at Shepparton Victoria. Service Number 6129 A descriptive diary written from pre embarkment on SS Zeelandia from Melbourne (31/05/1917) to Sydney and leaving on 9/06/1917 on the Destroyer flotilla including “Yarra-79”, “Parramatta - 55” and the “Warrego-70” for Malta Station in the Mediterrainean.Details of the personal daily activities onboard Destroyer during The Great War, descriptions include ports of call, other destroyers and warships on way to and including in the Mediterrainean. The social activities with shore leave and detailed description of the vista at different ports including Singapore and via th Suez Canal to the Mediterrainean.Black bound foolscap book with frayed top and bottom edges of cover. Areas are white markings on front and back covers. Hand written daily diary in ink, italiac script, pages are of ledger appearance with faint pink lines. He enlisted in the 23rd Batt AIF on 11.1.1915. Embarked for Eygpt on 4.5.1915 then to Gallipoli late August 1915. Disembarked from Gallipoli 10.1.1916. Transferred to 6th M G Coy 1.3.1916. Embarked for France 24.3.1916. Awarded Military Medal at Moquet Farm 25.8.1916. Promoted Cpl 11.6.1917. Promoted Sgt 19.12.1917. WIA 29.8.1918, GSW severe to forearm. The camera belonged to Benjamin Marshman LONG No 97 Australian Remount Unit 1 Sqd 1. He enlisted on 15.9.1915 aged 47 years. Serving overseas he was hospitalised on 26.4.1916 with heat stroke. He was discharged from the AIF on 5.12.1916 as the unit was disbanded. He had 3 sons in the AIF. Horace (Swag) No 437, 9th & 4th L.H. Regt - he was hospitalised 3 times with various illnesses. Benjamin (Marsh) No 439, 4th L.H.Regt - he was hospitalised twice necessitating a return to Australia. Reuben (Rube) No 2192, 4th reinforcements 60th Batt AIF - he was WIA in France twice. Swag and Marsh met up with their Father while overseas. Uniforms worn by the soldiers in the illustration suggest that the item was used by Australians in World War One. Soldiers had to purchase the item.Rectangular hinged tin with a coloured illustration on the top. Illustration features three soldiers in an outdoor tented campsite. Illustration is bordered in black. Title in black and white lettering includes the text, CAMP POCKET CANDLESTICK./A SOLDIER’S FRIEND. Sides of the tin feature a yellow and green tartan pattern. Base of the tin is silver coloured with traces of the yellow and green tartan pattern. Inside of the tin has compartments for a candle and matches and a holder for a lit candle. Trousers owned by Brian Timberlake No 3791718 Australian Intelligence Corps, Vietnam 10.12.1968 to 25.6.1969Khaki battle dress trousers in wool fabric with pleated front. Waistband and pockets lined with light khaki cotton drill fabric. Wide waistband secured with three brown bakerlite buttons Inside the waistband are six brown bakerlite buttons used to secure braces. On each outer side of the waistband are two tabs with metal fasteners used to adjust the waistband. Extra buttons are sewn onto the outside of the waistband. A three button fly is on the front of the trousers. Pockets consist of two hip with button down flaps, two lined side and one left leg cargo with button down flap. A light khaki heel protector is sewn into the hem of each trouser leg. Cuff adjuster straps with buttons are sewn onto each side at the bottom of each leg.Handwritten in black ink on inside of the waistband, "B TIMBERLAKE 3791718".
